Alex Kiss-Rusk registered a "double-double" and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor as the McGill University women's basketball team toppled the Maryville Saints 75-49, Wednesday, at Love Competition Hall.
Kiss-Rusk, a third-year transfer from Virginia Tech, tailed 14 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and was three blocks shy of a "triple-double" after swatting seven Maryville shots.
It was the second game in as many nights for the Martlets who improved their record against NCAA opponents to 1-2 so far this season and was thier first conquest over an NCAA opponent since a 68-46 win over Manhattan College on Sept. 21, 2014.
Maryville, an NCAA Div. 2 team from St. Louis, Missouri, was led by freshman
Ali Ringering of Red Bulll, Ill., with 11 points.
"We played an overtime game yesterday so that was tough," said McGill head coach
Ryan Thorne. "Despite that, we talked about having good full-court energy all game long tonight and I think the girls responded."
McGill, which has finished atop the RSEQ conference standings for the past five seasons, jumped into an early 8-1 lead and never trailed. They led 12-8 after the opening quarter, 28-18 at the half and 51-34 after three.
Three other Martlets also reached double-digits in scoring. Senior guard and team captain
Dianna Ros added 13 points, while
Jennifer Silver and
Gabriela Hebert had 12 and 10, respectively. McGill also got some help off the bench.
Stephanie Blais, a 6-foot-2 forward from Sherbrooke, Que., had eight points on a 4-for-4 shooting performance, while teammates
Marie-Love Michel and
Marika Guerin had six apiece.
The Martlets, who had the top defence in the CIS last season, forced 26 Saints turnovers, including a dozen steals. They were also a force underneath the hoop with nine blocks while out-rebounding Maryville by a 33-25 margin.
McGill shot 47.6 per cent from the floor (30/63), 21.4 from the three-point arc (3/14) and went 12-for-14 from the line. The Saints replied with a dismal 29.3, 50 and 52.6, respectively.
The Saints now drop to 1-1 in their Canadian tour, including a 57-48 win over Bishop's Monday.
The Martlets will battle the Ohio Bobcats on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in their final NCAA matchup before heading overseas for a slate of exhibition games in Greece.
