STE-FOY, Que. — Calgary's Kourtney Oss and McGill's Emilia Diaz-Ruiz each recorded a double-double as the third-seeded Dinos defeated the No. 6 Martlets 58-45 in a Sun Life U SPORTS women's basketball Final 8 national quarter-final Thursday at Laval's Amphithéâtre Desjardins.

The loss ends the Martlets' pursuit of the Bronze Baby trophy, originally donated by the McGill Students' Society in 1922. McGill (17-10) will instead meet No. 7 Carleton (16-7) in a consolation semifinal Friday at 5 p.m.

Calgary now holds a 7-2 advantage in nine lifetime meetings with McGill. The Dinos, fresh off their Canada West championship, improved to 27-4 overall and advanced to Saturday's semifinal, where they will face No. 2 UNB, which defeated Carleton 81-63 in another quarter-final.

McGill, the RSEQ champs, struggled to find offensive rhythm throughout, shooting just 24.6 per cent from the field (16-for-65), including 3-of-23 from three-point range. The Martlets trailed 11-9 after the first quarter and were tied 27-27 at halftime before Calgary gradually created separation in the second half.

The Dinos outscored McGill 12-9 in the third quarter to take a 41-36 lead, then erupted for 17 points in the fourth while holding the Martlets to nine.

Calgary finished 26-for-66 from the field (39.4 per cent) and dominated the paint with a 42-22 edge in points inside. The Martlets were competitive on the glass, narrowly trailing 38-37 in rebounds, and forced 18 turnovers while committing the same number. The Martlets, who ranked eighth in the nation in free-throw shooting at 73.1 per cent, were a tepid 10-for-17 from the stripe, while Calgary was 5-for-6.

Oss was named as Calgary's player of the game after scoring 18 points and collecting 17 rebounds. Teammates Pollyanna Storie and Milica Gajic added 13 and eight points, respectively.

Diaz-Ruiz was named as McGill's player of the game and  was a steady interior presence throughout. She tallied 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Katie Rathwell contributed nine points off the bench, while Emma-Jane Scotten scored seven.

Lily Rose Chatila, who who entered the tournament averaging 16.3 points per game, was stifled by Calgary's defence and limited to just four points on 1-of-12 shooting. She also ran into foul trouble, collecting four infractions for only the second time this season, but added three assists and two steals in 29 minutes.

Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but Calgary capitalized with 14 points off miscues.

For the Martlets, the appearance marked their first trip to nationals since 2018 — one year after capturing the national championship. The program now turns its attention to closing out the tournament on a positive note in the consolation bracket.

STE-FOY, Qc — Kourtney Oss, de Calgary, et Emilia Diaz-Ruiz, de McGill, ont chacune réussi un double-double, mais les Dinos, troisièmes têtes de série, ont vaincu les Martlets, classées sixièmes, 58-45 jeudi en quart de finale du championnat féminin de basketball de U SPORTS à l'Amphithéâtre Desjardins de Laval.

La défaite met fin à la quête du trophée Bronze Baby des Martlets, remis à l'équipe championne canadienne et offert à l'origine par la Société des étudiants de McGill en 1922. McGill (17-10) affrontera plutôt Carleton (16-7), septième tête de série, en demi-finale de consolation vendredi à 17 h.

Championnes du RSEQ, les Martlets ont éprouvé des difficultés offensives, affichant un taux d'efficacité de 24,6 % (16-en-65), dont 3-en-23 derrière l'arc. McGill tirait de l'arrière 11-9 après le premier quart et faisait jeu égal 27-27 à la mi-temps, avant que Calgary ne prenne graduellement le contrôle en deuxième demie.

Les Dinos ont dominé le troisième quart 12-9 pour prendre les devants 41-36, puis ont ajouté 17 points au dernier engagement tout en limitant les Martlets à neuf.

Calgary a conclu la rencontre avec un rendement de 39,4 % au tir (26-en-66) et a dominé 42-22 au chapitre des points dans la peinture. McGill a fait jeu égal aux rebonds, s'inclinant de justesse 38-37, et les deux équipes ont commis 18 revirements chacune. Les Dinos ont toutefois transformé ces pertes de balle en 14 points.

Les Martlets, qui occupaient le huitième rang national pour l'efficacité aux lancers francs (73,1 %), ont été limitées à 10-en-17 (58,8 %) à la ligne, tandis que Calgary a réussi 5 de ses 6 tentatives.

Oss a été nommée joueuse du match pour Calgary après avoir inscrit 18 points et capté 17 rebonds. Pollyanna Storie et Milica Gajic ont ajouté respectivement 13 et huit points.

Diaz-Ruiz a reçu le titre de joueuse du match pour McGill. Elle a amassé 15 points et un sommet dans la rencontre avec 14 rebonds. Katie Rathwell a fourni neuf points en sortie de banc, tandis qu'Emma-Jane Scotten en a inscrit sept.

Lily-Rose Chatila, qui amorçait le tournoi avec une moyenne de 16,3 points par match, a été neutralisée par la défensive albertaine et limitée à quatre points sur un tir réussi en 12 tentatives. Elle a également écopé de quatre fautes — une rareté cette saison — mais a ajouté trois passes décisives et deux interceptions en 29 minutes de jeu.

Cette participation marquait la première présence des Martlets au championnat national depuis 2018, un an après avoir remporté le titre canadien. McGill cherchera maintenant à conclure le tournoi sur une note positive dans la ronde consolation.
