Box Score SHERBROOKE, Que. – Université de Sherbrooke quarterback
Jérémi Roch became the all-time career passing yards leader in a 45-10 home-field win over McGill in RSEQ football before over 2,000 fans at UdeS Stadium, Saturday .
The Vert & Or, who racked up six TDs and 408 yards of net offence compared to McGill's 260, but only had a 23-18 edge in first downs. They led 7-0 after the first quarter, 23-3 at the half and 38-3 after three. The Redmen committed seven of the eight turnovers in the game, including a pair on interceptions, two more on fumbles and three on downs. The contest was marred by 24 penalties for a combined 220 yards of real estate, with both teams reaching the century mark.
There wasn't much positive news for the Redmen who were playing without injured
Karl Forgues, their star middle linebacker who still leads the league with 41.5 tackles, including three QB sacks in his five games. McGill's scoring came from a 35-yard field-goal by
Justin Lavallee late in the second quarter and a one-yard TD plunge by rookie quarterback
Nicolas English midway through the final stanza.
Roch, a native of LaSalle, Que., completed 11 of 16 passes for three touchdowns, no interceptions and 216 yards through the air in less than three quarters of action against the Redmen to push the new national standard to 10,964, surpassing
Michael Faulds, who had 10,811 during his brilliant five-year run with Western (2005-2009).
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound administration student set the new record in style, connecting with
Carl Gagnon-Bisaillon for a 47-yard score at 4:16 of the second quarter. He also hooked up with receivers
Martin Maheux and
Frederick Caron, for touchdown tosses of seven and 16 yards, respectively.
Scoring majors on the ground for Sherbrooke was
Simon Benoit (four yards),
Mathieu Loranger (four yards) and
Issac Lauzon (a one-yard plunge), who led all rushers with 65 yards on nine carries.. Rounding out the scoring for the Vert & Or was kicker
Mathieu Hebert with seven points, converting all six TDs and adding a rouge on a missed 25-yard field-goal. He also averaged 41.9 yards on seven punts and 53.3 on seven kickoffs.
At quarterback for McGill, English started and went the distance, completing 16 of 39 attempts for 162 yards and a pair of picks. He also rushed for 64 yards. His favourite target was
Louis Brouillette, who hauled in six balls for 66 yards. The speedy wide-out finished with 96 all-purpose yards, including 20 on five punt returns and 10 more on three kickoff returns. Brouillette was also called on to punt on a botched third-down attempt.
McGill, which went winless last year but owns a respectable 3-3 record this season in the six-team RSEQ conference, with two games left on the schedule -- against Concordia (3-3) on Oct. 24 and Laval (5-1) on Oct. 31 -- both of them at Percival Molson Stadium. Regardless of what happens in the final week of the season, McGill's playoff hopes will come down to next week's Homecoming Game for the Shaughnessy Cup. Since the Redmen lost their previous matchup 33-21 to Concordia, McGill must defeat the Stingers by at least 13 points to win the tie-breaker and qualify for post-season play.
GAME NOTES: There were no sacks by either side and Sherbrooke's
Alexandre Gagne led all players with six tackles, a pair of knockdows and a fumble return. Leading the defence for McGill was weakside linebacker
Maxime Rouyer (five tackles), rush end
Devon Stewart (4.5) and cornerback
Woldy Murat (4)... With two conference games remaining in his career, Roch is now the all-time CIS leader in passing yards, attempts (1,400) and completions (828). He established the new national marks for career attempts and completions in Sherbrooke's last contest, two weeks ago against Montreal. With 65 touchdown passes in his career, Roch is one shy of the RSEQ conference record held by former Laval standout Benoit Groulx (2005-2009). He ranks ninth on the all-time CIS list, 22 behind the standard set by Saint Mary's Chris Flynn (1987-1990).
