(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)
In anticipation of the upcoming preseason football opener between the Toronto Varsity Blues and McGill Redbirds on Aug. 22, 2026, two of the oldest football clubs in the world, here is a Montreal newspaper's post-game of the first-ever meeting between these historic rivals, a 2-0 shutout victory by McGill over U of T on Oct. 22, 1881 played on the front campus in Toronto. In that era, teams registered one point on the scoreboard if they successfully made a drop goal (i.e. a kick through the uprights) or converted a touchdown. If they failed the conversion attempt, the touchdown only counted if needed to break a tied score at the end of the game. The McGill football club was founded in 1872, while Toronto officially began organized play in 1877. Here is an article reprinted from The Gazette, published on Oct. 24, 1881.
(1881-10-24 The Montreal Gazette's post-game recap)
FOOTBALL: TORONTO UNIVERSITY VS. M'GILL.
The match between the University of Toronto and "McGill" was played on the University grounds, Toronto, on Saturday afternoon, The McGill men left this city[Montreal] in good spirits by the 10 o'clock train on Thursday evening, and were welcomed in Toronto on Friday morning by Captain Campbell and his team, who accompanied them to the Rossin House to dinner.
The afternoon was occupied with visiting the University buildings and grounds, Although the cloudy sky portended rain there was a large attendance of the lovers of the game on the grounds on Saturday afternoon, Toronto's fairest daughters honored the visiting team by wearing their colors of red and white.
The ball was kicked off by the Torontos at 3 o'clock but was quickly returned by Hamilton and rushed up towards the Toronto goal. Here the play displayed by the forwards of both sides was excellent.
A scrimmage takes place, Hague securing the ball, makes a run and is checked by McKay, another scrimmage is in order and a Toronto man secures the ball for a run, but is quickly checked by Street, and so the first three-quarters pass without any advantage being gained by either side.
Time is called. The ball is started off by Haythorn with a magnificent kick which takes it almost within touch, and Stirling secures the first touchdown for McGill.
A trial kick is quickly followed by another touchdown by R. Smith, and after the second kick the ball is rouged and brought out by the Torontos and the game proceeds. Murray secures the ball from a scrimmage, takes a run and is checked, passes it to Thomas, who runs quite a distance before he is checked. The ball is placed in scrimmage and carried down towards the McGill goals, when Low makes a splendid kick which places it with a Toronto man who takes a flying kick at goal and McGill rouges it.
Time is called after another rouge has been taken, McGill winning by two touches down: It is a hard matter to pick out those who excelled on the field. Sufficient it is to say McGill is proud of her football team.

==========================================================
McGILL
(24 octobre 1881 – The Montreal Gazette)
