ABOUT THE McGILL REDBIRDS: McGill is kicking off its 155th year of organized football since it first played way back in 1872, five years after the official Canadian confederation… In that inaugural season, McGill confronted local club teams, primarily composed of British soldiers who were garrisoned in the city to prevent an attack from the Americans. It took two more years before McGill met Harvard in the first-ever intercollegiate rugby-style football game in 1874 and both institutions celebrated the 150th anniversary of that event during the 2024 season… Prior to the development of rugby-style football (i.e. running with the ball) was a soccer-style of football (i.e. kicking the ball)… Since McGill's first football campaign in 1872, it enters the 2026 season having played
1,061 games overall, posting a lifetime record of 450-584-27 (including non-conference and post-season games). Since McGill began playing in an intercollegiate league in 1898, the team, has posted a lifetime record 305-435-14 in
754 regular season games.
THE McGILL-TORONTO SERIES: McGill will play the University of Toronto at Varsity Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 22 with a 12 noon kickoff. It will be McGill's first football visit to the Greater Toronto Area in a dozen years dating back to a wild 35-33 preseason conquest over the Varsity Blues on Aug. 23, 2014… The longtime rivals rekindled one of the sport's oldest rivalries last year, when McGill defeated visiting Toronto 37-10 on Aug. 15, 2025 at Percival Molson Stadium... U of T officially organized its team in 1877, five years after McGill's club was formed… The two programs' storied and intertwined football history dates to 1881, when they first squared off in a contest that helped shape the early Canadian game. McGill won that first meeting 2-0 on Oct. 22, 1881 at the U of T's main campus field. In that era, scoring a point typically happened by kicking a successful conversion after scoring a try (touchdown) and McGill converted both of its tries, while Toronto failed in their conversion attempt on their lone try. Since then, the Varsity Blues lead the all-time series with a 95-53-7 record in head-to-head play.
POST-GAME ALUMNI RECEPTION: The Friends of McGill Football have organized a post-game alumni reception from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Toronto at the Duke of York Pub, located downtown at 39 Prince Arthur Avenue.

Alex Surprenant to the team's social media account. "The guys are competing (hard for spots)… Our offence had a good start (to training camp)… but the defence was able to answer back and maintain the momentum. So, we (coaches) appreciate that competition. (We're looking forward to) going away to Toronto and seeing the (alumni support there) from the Friends of McGill Football... The team's leaving (Montreal) Friday morning early and taking the bus to Toronto. We're going to have a practice over there and a team meal after that. Then get ready for game day on Saturday… We can't wait (to play). I think it's been something like 12 years since the team was in the GTA. So yeah, it's going to be a good, cool experience for the guys."
NEW SEASON, NEW LOOK: The McGill football squad will be sporting new adidas uniforms when they kickoff the preseason in Toronto. McGill's dark outfit features a red helmet, red jersey and red pants, with white trim in each area and a smaller pro-style school name branding on the front above the number. There are white stripes on the red shoulders and the new old school "M" logo that was launched last fall. The logo is in white on the right-side pant hip and in the front of the helmet. The pants feature a white stripe along the side of each leg. The light uniform is identical but features red trimmings on the helmet, jersey and pants.
2026 U SPORTS PRESEASON FOOTBALL: Other preseason matchups this Saturday (Aug. 22) include Laval at Queen's and Ottawa at Montreal… Next week, the OUA begins regular season play with games slated for Aug. 29, featuring Carleton at York, Ottawa at Waterloo, Guelph at Laurier and Windsor at McMaster… In the AUS, the exhibition season begins on Aug. 29, when St.FX plays at Saint Mary's, while Mount Allison visits Acadia; the AUS regular season begins on Sept. 4 with Acadia at Mount Allison… In Canada West, Regina plays at Calgary on Aug. 23 and Alberta is at Saskatchewan on Aug. 27… The regular conference play begins on Sept. 4 with UBC at Calgary and Regina at Alberta, followed on Sept. 5 with Saskatchewan at Manitoba.
UPCOMING RSEQ REGULAR SEASON: The Quebec conference has expanded to six teams with the return of Bishop's after 10 years in the AUS league. The new campaign kicks off on Sept. 4 with Montreal at Sherbrooke (televised on TVA Sports), followed by two games on Sept. 5: McGill at Bishop's and Concordia at Laval… The RSEQ's Jacques Dussault Cup champion (formerly Dunsmore Cup) will host both the national semifinal Uteck Bowl (against the Canada West team on Nov. 21) and the Vanier Cup Game in Quebec City (Nov. 28).
LAST SEASON IN THE RSEQ: Laval finished atop the RSEQ conference with a 7-1 record. They were followed by second-place Montreal (6-2), third-place Concordia (3-5), fourth-place
McGill (2-6) and fifth-place Sherbrooke (2-6)… The Redbirds split their two-game series against two teams: Montreal and Sherbrooke but lost their two games against both Laval and Concordia. McGill's 31-24 win over the omnipotent Carabins marked the team's first triumph over the cross-town rival in 23 years since Oct. 7, 2002, and the Redbirds almost swept the series but suffered a heartbreaking 32-28 loss in the rematch… In the playoffs, McGill fell 47-25 to Laval, the eventual Quebec league and national Vanier Cup champions.
REDBIRDS ROSTER RAP: The 2026 McGill football training camp tied a school record with 103 players, under the leadership of head coach
Alex Surprenant and his staff. He recruited 53 freshmen last season – the McGill football program's best recruiting turnout ever—and added 34 more this season... The breakdown by class includes 34 freshmen, 44 sophomores, 14 juniors and 11 seniors... The academic distribution by faculty is Arts (34), Education (26), Management (16), Engineering (15), Science (10), Arts & Science (1) and one is enrolled in a certificate program in the faculty of Continuing Studies.
The geographical spread includes a team record 85 Quebecers, three Ontarians, one apiece from British Columbia and New Brunswick, plus six natives of France and six Americans... The team's average age is 20.9 years, measuring an average of 6-foot-1 and 216.5 pounds (1.5 pounds shy of the school record set last year for the heaviest team on record in McGill football history).
KEY STARTERS LOST: The Redbirds have lost a dozen seniors to graduation, including 10 starters. The six starters lost on offence include:

Last year, ELR surpassed the McGill
all-time TD rushing record (25) set in 1978 by running back
Tom Barbeau, who tallied 25 on the ground in 27 contests from 1975 to 1978. The previous season, "ELR" surpassed McGill's all-time
rushing record of 21 initially set by Barbeau in 1978 and matched 24 years later by fullback
Nick Hoffmann (1999-2002). A two-time Team MVP, ELR merited an invite to join the 2025 Montreal Alouettes training camp through CFL's Quarterback Internship program and was selected in the seventh round (58
th overall) by Edmonton in the 2026 CFL Draft. He was sixth McGill quarterback ever drafted and the first since
Rich Ripstein in 1966. Other pivots drafted from McGill include

Graeme Strathdee (1953)… ELR was a late training camp cut by Edmonton who suggested he would be best suited as a receiver. FRESHMAN FIELD GENERAL?: In the wake of "ELR's move to receiver,
Elliott Drapeau, a 6-foot-6, 208-pound blue-chip recruit from Quebec City, is expected to challenge sophomore
Arnaud Dugas (6'4", 203) for the starting role. Drapeau, who hails from Laval, Que., is bidding to become the 11th freshman to do so. The modern-day list of McGill quarterbacks who became starters as a true freshman includes

À PROPOS DES REDBIRDS DE McGILL : McGill amorce sa 155e saison de football organisé, une histoire qui remonte à 1872, cinq ans après la Confédération canadienne. Lors de cette première saison, McGill affrontait des clubs locaux, composés principalement de soldats britanniques en garnison à Montréal afin de protéger la ville contre une éventuelle attaque américaine.
Deux ans plus tard, en 1874, McGill affrontait Harvard lors du tout premier match interuniversitaire disputé selon des règles s'apparentant au rugby. Les deux établissements ont souligné le 150e anniversaire de cette rencontre historique au cours de la saison 2024. Avant l'apparition de cette forme de football, où les joueurs pouvaient courir avec le ballon, le sport ressemblait davantage au soccer et reposait principalement sur le jeu au pied.
Depuis sa première saison en 1872, McGill a disputé 1 061 matchs, présentant une fiche cumulative de 450-584-27, incluant les rencontres hors concours et éliminatoires. Depuis son entrée dans une ligue interuniversitaire en 1898, McGill montre une fiche de 305-435-14 en 754 matchs de saison régulière.
LA RIVALITÉ McGILL-TORONTO : Les Redbirds rendront visite aux Varsity Blues de l'Université de Toronto au Varsity Stadium, le samedi 22 août à midi. Il s'agira de la première visite de McGill dans la région du Grand Toronto en 12 ans. La dernière remonte au 23 août 2014, alors que McGill avait remporté un match préparatoire spectaculaire 35-33 contre les Varsity Blues.
Ces deux vieux rivaux ont renoué avec l'une des plus anciennes rivalités du football canadien l'an dernier, lorsque McGill a défait Toronto 37-10, le 15 août 2025 au stade Percival-Molson.
L'Université de Toronto a officiellement fondé son équipe en 1877, cinq ans après McGill. L'histoire commune des deux programmes remonte à 1881, année où ils se sont affrontés pour la première fois dans un match qui a contribué à façonner les débuts du football canadien. McGill avait remporté cette première confrontation 2-0, le 22 octobre 1881, sur le campus principal de l'Université de Toronto.
À cette époque, les points étaient notamment inscrits grâce à une transformation réussie après un essai — l'ancêtre du touché. McGill avait réussi les transformations suivant ses deux essais, tandis que Toronto avait raté la sienne. Depuis cette première rencontre, Toronto mène la série historique 95-53-7.
RÉCEPTION DES ANCIENS APRÈS LE MATCH : Les Friends of McGill Football tiendront une réception destinée aux anciens de 14 h 30 à 16 h 30, au Duke of York Pub, situé au 39, avenue Prince Arthur, au centre-ville de Toronto.
ÉCHOS DU CAMP D'ENTRAÎNEMENT : « Nous sommes plus forts, plus imposants et plus rapides, et nous avons davantage de profondeur. Nous sommes donc très satisfaits de ce que nous voyons jusqu'à maintenant », a déclaré Alex Surprenant, qui entreprend sa troisième saison comme entraîneur-chef de McGill.
« Les gars se livrent une chaude lutte pour obtenir des postes. Notre attaque a connu un bon début de camp, mais la défensive a répliqué et a su maintenir le rythme. Comme entraîneurs, nous aimons voir ce genre de compétition.
« Nous avons hâte d'aller à Toronto et de voir le soutien de nos anciens et des Friends of McGill Football. L'équipe quittera Montréal tôt vendredi matin en autobus. Nous allons nous entraîner là-bas, puis prendre un repas d'équipe avant de nous préparer pour le match de samedi.
« Nous avons très hâte de jouer. Ça doit faire environ 12 ans que l'équipe n'a pas joué dans la région du Grand Toronto. Ce sera donc une expérience vraiment intéressante pour les gars. »
NOUVELLE SAISON, NOUVEAU LOOK : Les Redbirds étrenneront de nouveaux uniformes adidas lors de leur match préparatoire à Toronto. L'uniforme foncé comprend un casque, un chandail et un pantalon rouges avec des garnitures blanches. Le nom de l'université, dans un format plus discret inspiré du style professionnel, apparaît à l'avant du chandail au-dessus du numéro.
Des bandes blanches ornent les épaules, tandis que le nouveau logo « M » de style rétro, lancé l'automne dernier, apparaît en blanc sur la hanche droite du pantalon ainsi qu'à l'avant du casque. Une bande blanche longe également chaque jambe du pantalon.
L'uniforme pâle reprend le même concept, mais avec le blanc comme couleur dominante et des garnitures rouges.
MATCHS PRÉPARATOIRES 2026 DE U SPORTS : Parmi les autres rencontres préparatoires prévues le samedi 22 août, Laval sera à Queen's, tandis qu'Ottawa visitera Montréal.
La saison régulière des SUO s'amorcera le 29 août avec Carleton à York, Ottawa à Waterloo, Guelph à Laurier et Windsor à McMaster.
Dans le SUA, le calendrier préparatoire commencera le 29 août avec St. Francis Xavier à Saint Mary's et Mount Allison à Acadia. La saison régulière débutera le 4 septembre avec Acadia à Mount Allison.
Dans Canada-Ouest, Regina sera à Calgary le 23 août et Alberta visitera Saskatchewan le 27 août. Le calendrier régulier s'amorcera le 4 septembre avec UBC à Calgary et Regina à Alberta, avant le duel Saskatchewan-Manitoba du 5 septembre.
À VENIR DANS LE RSEQ : La conférence québécoise passe à six équipes avec le retour des Gaiters de Bishop's, qui ont évolué pendant 10 ans dans le SUA.
La saison s'amorcera le 4 septembre, alors que Montréal visitera Sherbrooke dans un match télédiffusé à TVA Sports. Deux autres rencontres suivront le 5 septembre : McGill à Bishop's et Concordia à Laval.
Le champion de la Coupe Jacques-Dussault du RSEQ, anciennement la Coupe Dunsmore, accueillera à la fois la demi-finale nationale de la Coupe Uteck, contre le représentant de Canada-Ouest le 21 novembre, et la Coupe Vanier, présentée à Québec le 28 novembre.
LA SAISON DERNIÈRE DANS LE RSEQ : Laval a terminé au premier rang avec une fiche de 7-1, devant Montréal (6-2), Concordia (3-5), McGill (2-6) et Sherbrooke (2-6).
Les Redbirds ont partagé leurs deux matchs contre Montréal et Sherbrooke, mais ont perdu leurs deux affrontements contre Laval et Concordia. Leur victoire de 31-24 contre les Carabins a toutefois constitué l'un des faits saillants de la saison : il s'agissait du premier gain de McGill contre son rival montréalais en 23 ans, soit depuis le 7 octobre 2002. Les Redbirds sont même passés bien près de balayer la série, avant de subir une crève-cœur de 32-28 lors du deuxième duel.
En séries éliminatoires, McGill s'est incliné 47-25 contre Laval, qui a ensuite remporté le championnat québécois et la Coupe Vanier.
PORTRAIT DE L'EFFECTIF : Le camp d'entraînement 2026 de McGill a égalé un record d'équipe avec 103 joueurs, sous la direction d'Alex Surprenant et de son personnel d'entraîneurs. Après avoir recruté un nombre record de 53 joueurs de première année l'an dernier, le programme en a ajouté 34 autres cette saison.
L'effectif comprend 34 joueurs de première année, 44 de deuxième année, 14 de troisième année et 11 de quatrième année ou plus.
Sur le plan académique, 34 joueurs étudient à la Faculté des arts, 26 en éducation, 16 en gestion, 15 en génie, 10 en sciences, un en arts et sciences et un autre est inscrit à un programme de certificat à l'École d'éducation permanente.
Sur le plan géographique, l'équipe compte un record de 85 Québécois, ainsi que trois Ontariens, un Britanno-Colombien, un Néo-Brunswickois, six Français et six Américains.
La moyenne d'âge est de 20,9 ans. Les joueurs mesurent en moyenne 6 pi 1 po et pèsent 216,5 lb, soit seulement 1,5 lb de moins que le record établi l'an dernier pour l'équipe la plus lourde de l'histoire du programme.
PLUSIEURS PARTANTS À REMPLACER : Les Redbirds ont perdu 12 joueurs finissants, dont 10 partants.
En attaque, les six partants qui ne sont plus avec l'équipe sont Brandon Ciccarello (centre-arrière), Darius Simmons (receveur), David Kabwe (receveur), Charles-Olivier Cyr (receveur), Félix-Olivier Leclerc (ligne offensive) et le centre Domenico Piazza.
En défensive, les quatre partants à remplacer sont Ilan Barbaras (secondeur), Jahnai Copeland-Lewis (demi défensif), Ryan McNally (maraudeur) et Thomas Raphael (demi de coin).
LATENDRESSE-REGIMBALD À LA CHASSE AU RECORD : Avec un record d'équipe de 31 touchés, tous inscrits au sol en 32 matchs de saison régulière, Éloa Latendresse-Regimbald n'est plus qu'à cinq touchés du record du RSEQ de 36, détenu par l'ancien porteur de ballon de Laval Pierre-Luc Yao (2003-2007).
Devant « ELR » au classement figurent également l'ancien porteur de ballon de Bishop's Jamall Lee, avec 35 touchés de 2005 à 2008, ainsi que l'ancien quart-arrière d'Ottawa Phil Côté, avec 32 de 1996 à 2000.
Les meneurs de l'histoire de McGill pour les touchés sont : Éloa Latendresse-Regimbald (31; 2022-2026), Tom Barbeau (25; 1975-1978), Nick Hoffmann (22; 1999-2002), David Fleiszer (21; 1966-1970), Shawn Linden (21; 1994-1998), Don Cowie (20; 1972-1974), Michael Soles (20; 1986-1989), Eric Walter (18; 1961-1965) et Charles-Antoine Sinotte (14; 2006-2010).
La saison dernière, Latendresse-Regimbald a battu le record de McGill pour les touchés au sol, qui appartenait à Tom Barbeau avec 25 en 27 matchs de 1975 à 1978. La saison précédente, ELR avait déjà battu le record de l'université pour les touchés au sol établi par Barbeau en 1978 et égalé 24 ans plus tard par Nick Hoffmann.
Deux fois nommé joueur par excellence de McGill, Latendresse-Regimbald avait participé au camp d'entraînement des Alouettes de Montréal en 2025 dans le cadre du programme de stages pour quarts-arrière de la LCF. Il a ensuite été sélectionné par Edmonton en septième ronde, 58e au total, au repêchage 2026 de la LCF.
Il est devenu le sixième quart-arrière de McGill repêché dans la LCF et le premier depuis Rich Ripstein en 1966. Les autres quarts de McGill repêchés sont Tom Skypeck (1963), John Roberts (1962), Emil Bosacki (1956) et Graeme Strathdee (1953).
Retranché tardivement au camp d'Edmonton, Latendresse-Regimbald s'est fait suggérer qu'il serait davantage à sa place comme receveur. Il est donc de retour à McGill pour une cinquième saison et effectuera la transition du poste de quart-arrière à celui de receveur.
Comme quart, ELR a lancé 29 passes de touché en carrière, ce qui le place à égalité au quatrième rang de l'histoire de McGill avec Josh Sommerfeldt. Il est devancé par Matt Connell (63), Vic Pywowarczuk (38) et Tom Skypeck (32).
UN QUART DE PREMIÈRE ANNÉE AUX COMMANDES? Avec le passage de Latendresse-Regimbald au poste de receveur, Elliott Drapeau, une recrue de premier plan de Québec qui mesure 6 pi 6 po et pèse 208 lb, devrait lutter avec le deuxième année Arnaud Dugas (6 pi 4 po, 203 lb) pour le poste de quart partant.
Drapeau, originaire de Laval, pourrait devenir le 11e joueur de première année à amorcer un match comme quart partant à McGill.
À l'ère moderne, la liste des quarts de McGill devenus partants dès leur véritable première saison comprend Éloa Latendresse-Regimbald (2022), Dimitrios Sinodinos (2017), Dallon Kuprowski (2011), Jonathan Collin (2009), Michael Ghorayeb (2005), Josh Sommerfeldt (1998), David McKinnon (1997), Vic Pywowarczuk (1976), Kevin Smith (1975) et Uldis Auders (1971).
Dan Smith avait pour sa part obtenu le poste de partant à 18 ans en 1969, à sa deuxième année, après avoir bénéficié d'une année de statut redshirt à sa première campagne.
