Cellar-dwelling Pats pull off crime of the century, steal win from lethargic soccer Redmen

Striker Alexander King celebrates goal

MONTREAL -- Frederic Sansoucy of Repentigny, Que., snapped a 1-1 tie with the game-winner in the 74th minute of play as the last-place Trois-Rivieres Patriotes stunned McGill 2-1 in RSEQ men's soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.

It was the first win of the season for UQTR, which now owns a 1-3-2 record at the halfway mark of the fall season. The loss was a costly one for the Redmen (3-3-0), who would've been tied with Laval for the division lead with a victory.

The Pats had a 14-9 advantage in attempted shots, including a 9-6 edge on target.

"It was a bad game at a bad time for us," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot.whose troops were missing starters Yannick Toker, a midfielder and Davide Salvoni, a defender. To make matters worse, they lost James Allester, a fifth-year defender, for a few minutes after he had suffered an apparent broken nose in the 15th minute of play. Two minutes later, while McGill was playing one man down, the Patriotes took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Karim Acharid in the 17th minute of play.

McGill striker Alexander King tied it at 1-1 in the 35th minute, converting a pass from Valentin Radevich. King, a fifth-year senior majoring in international development studies, is now tied for fourth among league leaders with four goals in six games.

Goalkeeper Raphael Belanger-Vaillancourt turned aside five of six shots for the win, while Redmen netminder Max Leblond took the loss. He was credited with seven saves on nine shots.

"Aside from the injuries, we just did not play well and were out-worked by a team who played with a lot of energy," noted Mounicot. "We were not up to par, did not play as a team and missed too many chances in the first half, when we had the advantage in play. Now we have to go back to basics and play hard in our next game."

The victory moved UQTR (1-3-2) out of the RSEQ cellar, two points ahead of winless Concordia (0-2-3. McGill (3-3-0), which is tied with Laval and Montreal for the league lead in wins, will get a chance to make up some ground in the standings when they host the Stingers on Sunday at 4 p.m.
