Clean living: Ciociola makes seven saves as McGill blanks Patriotes at Molson Stadium

'Keeper posts fourth shutout in five games as Redbirds continue to climb

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — Goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola made seven saves to post his second consecutive shutout as the McGill Redbirds blanked the visiting UQTR Patriotes 2-0 in RSEQ men's soccer action Thursday under wet conditions at Percival Molson Stadium.

Pacome Sordet, a freshman from Versailles, France,  scored the game-winner in the 25th minute and forward Spencer Neil, a first-year transfer from the NCAA's Nazareth University, added an insurance marker in the 62nd as McGill extended its undefeated streak to five games at 4-0-1.

The victory moved the Redbirds into a tie for second place in the seven-team Quebec conference. With five games remaining before the playoffs, McGill is 4-2-1, even with Laval (4-1-1), which holds a game in hand. UQTR is just one point back.

McGill broke through in the 25th minute when Sordet, a speedy 5-foot-7, 131-pound midfielder, scored to give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead. Sordet punctuated his first career goal with an acrobatic front flip.

The Patriotes pressed for an equalizer before halftime and Ciociola was tested repeatedly as UQTR searched for a way back into the match. The six-foot, 178-pound Montrealer stopped Jean-Gabriel Roy in the 27th minute and Simeon Lalande in the 41st before making five more saves after halftime.

The fifth-year goalkeeper's clean sheet was his fourth during McGill's five-game undefeated streak. The Redbirds have conceded just one goal over that span.

McGill carried its one-goal advantage into halftime and UQTR increased the pressure after the break.

Ciociola turned aside Gabriel Levasseur in the 52nd minute and Mouhamed N'Diaye four minutes later. The Redbirds also received some timely defensive help when Renaud Fleury blocked a Raphael Lacaille attempt and another UQTR shot was cleared by the McGill defence.

The Redbirds weathered the surge and doubled their advantage against the run of play in the 62nd minute.

Yusuke Sato set up Neil, who converted at 61:50 for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 McGill lead. It capped a brilliant sequence that featured 10 consecutive McGill touches involving nine different players.

The Redbirds nearly added to their advantage shortly afterward. Nicholas Minchillo forced UQTR goalkeeper Shems Lidam into a save in the 65th minute before Ashaan Sanghera-Gulamhussein tested him with a header less than a minute later.

Ciociola continued to shut the door at the other end, denying Xavier O'Dwyer in the 83rd minute before making another save on Mathis Morin in the dying moments.

UQTR held a slim 13-12 advantage in attempted shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. The teams finished even with four corner kicks apiece.

The physical contest featured six yellow cards and a late ejection. Samy Rzig, Sanghera-Gulamhussein and Neil were cautioned for McGill, while Zakary Minka, Simeon Lalande and Simon Lamarche received yellow cards for UQTR. Lamarche was subsequently shown a red card in the 87th minute.

The Patriotes return home Sunday to face the undefeated Montreal Carabins (5-0-1) at 1 p.m. McGill has a week off before hosting Laval in a key matchup at Percival Molson Stadium on Oct. 9 at 8:15 p.m.
