MONTREAL — Nicholas Minchillo scored a late insurance goal and set up Nathan Yee's first-half winner as a short-handed McGill squad blanked the visiting Concordia Stingers 2-0 in RSEQ men's soccer action Friday at Percival Molson Stadium.
The victory extended McGill's undefeated streak to four games at 3-0-1 and improved its overall record to 3-2-1. The Redbirds moved into a tie for second place with idle Laval (3-1-1) in the seven-team Quebec conference. UQTR (3-2-0) is close behind, while the No. 1-ranked Montreal Carabins lead the pack with an unbeaten 5-0-1 record.
McGill also continued its recent dominance of its cross-town rival. The Redbirds have won five consecutive meetings with Concordia since their last setback in 2023 and are 6-1-1 over their past eight confrontations with the Stingers.
After several early chances at both ends, McGill broke the scoreless deadlock in the 40th minute. Minchillo supplied the setup and Yee converted at 39:07 for his first goal of the season, giving the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.
The complexion of the match changed less than three minutes later when McGill forward Maher Fares, who had been cautioned moments earlier, was shown a red card in the 42nd minute.
The ejection left the Redbirds a man down for the final 48 minutes, plus injury time.
Concordia applied considerable pressure after the break, but McGill goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola repeatedly turned the Stingers away. He stopped George Rassias twice early in the second half, then denied Andrew Razvan Ungureanu and Olivier Nukia Langué Dubé as Concordia searched for the equalizer.
Ciociola later frustrated Mahdi Djellab in the 84th minute, setting the stage for McGill to put the game away at the other end.
With the Redbirds still protecting a one-goal advantage, Minchillo struck in the 86th minute. The rookie midfielder scored his third goal of the campaign to make it 2-0 and move into a tie for third place in the RSEQ goal-scoring race with three goals in six games.
The Stingers continued to press until the final whistle. Ciociola stopped Amadou Alioune Diop in the 90th minute before Diop struck the crossbar on another opportunity moments later.
Ciociola finished with nine saves to earn the shutout, his third clean sheet in McGill's past four games. Concordia goalkeeper Sebastien Melendez was credited with one save.
Concordia held a 13-8 advantage in attempted shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, with much of that pressure coming after McGill was reduced to 10 men. The Redbirds held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The physical contest also featured activity on both benches. Concordia head coach Mario D'Otolo was shown a yellow card in the opening minute of the second half, while assistant coach Billy Zagakos was ejected after receiving a red card. McGill's Romain Dallery was also cautioned, along with Fares before his subsequent ejection.
Concordia fell to 0-5-0 and returns to action Sunday when the Stingers host UQTR at 1 p.m. McGill has a short break before hosting UQTR at Percival Molson Stadium on Oct. 1 at 8:15 p.m.

MONTRÉAL — Nicholas Minchillo a inscrit un but d'assurance en fin de match et préparé le but victorieux de Nathan Yee en première demie, alors que les Redbirds de McGill, réduits à 10 joueurs, ont blanchi les Stingers de Concordia 2-0, vendredi, au stade Percival-Molson, dans un match de soccer masculin du RSEQ.
Cette victoire a prolongé à quatre matchs la séquence sans défaite de McGill, qui présente un dossier de 3-0-1 au cours de cette période et une fiche globale de 3-2-1. Les Redbirds ont rejoint Laval (3-1-1), qui était inactif, au deuxième rang de la conférence québécoise à sept équipes. L'UQTR (3-2-0) suit de près, tandis que les Carabins de Montréal, classés premiers au pays, dominent avec une fiche immaculée de 5-0-1.
McGill a également poursuivi sa récente domination sur son rival montréalais. Les Redbirds ont remporté leurs cinq dernières confrontations contre Concordia depuis leur dernier revers en 2023 et présentent une fiche de 6-1-1 lors des huit derniers duels entre les deux équipes.
Après quelques occasions de part et d'autre en début de rencontre, McGill a rompu l'impasse à la 40e minute. Minchillo a préparé le jeu et Yee a fait mouche à 39:07 pour inscrire son premier but de la saison et donner une avance de 1-0 aux Redbirds.

Toujours en avance par un seul but, les Redbirds ont vu Minchillo frapper à la 86e minute. Le milieu recrue a inscrit son troisième but de la campagne pour porter la marque à 2-0 et se hisser à égalité au troisième rang des buteurs du RSEQ avec trois filets en six matchs.
Les Stingers ont continué d'attaquer jusqu'au coup de sifflet final. Ciociola a repoussé une tentative d'Amadou Alioune Diop à la 90e minute avant que ce dernier ne frappe la barre transversale sur une autre occasion quelques instants plus tard.
Ciociola a terminé la rencontre avec neuf arrêts pour signer le jeu blanc, son troisième au cours des quatre derniers matchs de McGill. Le gardien de Concordia Sebastien Melendez a été crédité d'un arrêt.
Concordia a eu l'avantage 13-8 au chapitre des tirs tentés et 9-5 pour les tirs cadrés, une bonne partie de cette pression étant survenue après que McGill eut été réduit à 10 joueurs. Les Redbirds ont toutefois obtenu quatre corners contre trois pour les Stingers.
Cette rencontre physique a également donné lieu à de l'action sur les deux bancs. L'entraîneur-chef de Concordia Mario D'Otolo a reçu un carton jaune dans la première minute de la deuxième demie, tandis que l'entraîneur adjoint Billy Zagakos a été expulsé après avoir écopé d'un carton rouge. Romain Dallery a également été averti du côté de McGill, tout comme Fares avant son expulsion.
Concordia a vu sa fiche glisser à 0-5-0 et reprendra l'action dimanche lorsque les Stingers accueilleront les Patriotes de l'UQTR à 13 h. McGill profitera d'une courte pause avant de recevoir l'UQTR au stade Percival-Molson le 1er octobre à 20 h 15.
