Box Score SUDBURY, Ont. — Rookie
Jerome Raymond scored the game-winner, his first career goal at the CIS level, as McGill skated to a gritty 3-2 road victory over the Laurentian University Voyageurs in OUA men's hockey action at Countryside Arena, Saturday.
SEE COMPLETE BOXSCOREThe win avenged a 5-2 setback to Laurentian at McConnell Arena last week, McGill's first loss to the Voyageurs in almost 18 years.
Â
McGill's power-play units went to work in the first period, opening up a two-goal lead on tallies just 4:20 apart. With just three seconds remaining in the first man-advantage, defenceman
Samuel Labrecque wired a shot past Voyageurs netminder
Alain Valiquette to make it 1-0. On the next power-play, Labrecque added a helper on
David Rose's goal to put McGill up 2-0.
Â
The Redmen went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage, while Laurentian failed to bulge twine on six attempts.
Â
Despite outshooting Laurentian 28-14 in the final two frames, the Voyageurs were able to tie the affair thanks to marker early in the second period from assistant captain
Michael MacDonald and a third-period tally from captain
Vincent Llorca.
Â
Not even three minutes after Llorca's tying goal, however, Rouyn-Noranda native Raymond provided some late-game heroics, scoring McGill's third goal and putting them up for good.
Â
Labrecque and team-scoring leader
Cedric McNicoll each finished with two points. McNicoll now has 12 on the season.
Â
McGill goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard stopped 20 of 22 shots to preserve the Redmen victory, collecting his third win in four games played. Despite making 33 saves, Valiquette took the loss for Laurentian, dropping his record to 4-2-0.
Â
The Redmen improved their record to 4-2-0 and will return home next weekend for a double-header at McConnell Arena against a couple of struggling OUA West Division opponents. McGill hits the ice Friday night (Oct. 31) against the Brock University Badgers (2-3-1), and takes on the York University Lions (3-5-0) on Saturday (Nov. 1). Puck drop for both games is 7 p.m.
