David Rose opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game, snapping a shot by Lakers goalie
Kirk Rafuse. Nipissing tied things up midway through the period on a power-play marker from
Colin Campbell, before
Neal Prokop answered just two minutes later, putting McGill back in front 2-1.
Â
Prokop's goal was the first of three in a row for McGill, including Brunelle's winner, the lone goal in the second period. Tardif-Richard later scored shorthanded and
Benoit Levesque popped McGill's fifth goal into an empty net. Nipissing defenceman
Jim McDowell scored the other goal for the Lakers.
Â
Three McGill players led the way with two points, including Rose, Tardif-Richard and assistant captain
Cedric McNicoll, who piled on a couple of helpers to extend his team lead to 10 points.
Â
McGill goaltender
Karel St-Laurent made 28 saves to collect his first win of the young season. Rafuse, meanwhile, stopped 32 of 36 shots he faced in a losing effort for the Lakers.
Â
In addition to scoring the game-winner, Brunelle also finished with 12 penalty minutes after being assessed a two-minute penalty for a hit to the head and 10-minute misconduct. Three players finished with double-digit penalty minutes, including Lakers defenceman
Chad Thibodeau with 15 — also for a hit to the head — and forward
Mitch Deacon with 12.
The two teams had previously faced each other a week earlier on Oct. 17, with McGill coming out on top 8-1 in front of a home crowd at McConnell Arena.
