Box Score MONTREAL --
Nick Esposito scored the game-winner midway through the final period and the visiting Laurentian University Voyagueurs added a pair of empty-net goals enroute to a surprising 5-2 triumph over McGill at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was Laurentian's first victory over the Redmen since Nov. 17, 1996 -- when they skated to an 8-4 triumph in Sudbury -- snapping an 0-4-1 winless streak as the Voyageurs improved to 5-11-2 lifetime in head-to-head meetings with McGill.
The teams traded goals in the first period with
Christopher Smith striking first, only 1:50 after the opening whistle. McGill evened the count when
Mathieu Pompei found the net at 7:22.
The scenario reversed in the middle stanza when
Jonathan Brunelle connected on the power-play to put McGill ahead at 1:21. But the Voyageurs replied with a PP goal by
Dylan Fitz at 6:05 to even the score, setting the stage for Esposito's winning tally.
The third period was a titanic struggle, with both sides getting chances. As the clock wound down, McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes pulled goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard for an extra attacker. The ploy failed, with
Jamie Haines and
Brian Nanne both adding empty-net markers.
Alain Valiquette made 27 saves to collect the win in the Voyageurs net, while Gervais-Chouinard made 22 saves and took the loss for McGill.
The Redmen, who had a 29-27 edge in shots, went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Laurentian was 1-for-4.
McGill, which dropped to 2-2-0 in OUA play, split their two weekend games with an 8-1 win over Nipissing and the setback to Laurentian. They will have return matches with a long road trip against the same teams, respectively, next weekend, travelling to Parry Sound, Ont., (Oct. 24) and Sudbury (Oct. 25).
