Box Score
KINGSTON, Ont. – Defenceman
Ryan McKiernan and forward
David Rose each scored twice and added an assist as the No. 6-ranked McGill men's hockey team trounced the Royal Military College Paladins 9-1 at Constantine Arena, Friday.
McGill, which improved to 56-8-4 lifetime against the Paladins, set a single-game school record with 75 shots, including a 27-4 margin in the first period. The team's previous high was 61 shots set 32 years ago, when they twice registered that plateau against UQAC (Oct. 24 and Nov. 15, 1981)
The Redmen led 3-0 after the opening period, 6-0 after two and had tallied nine consecutive goals before Chris Smerek ruined Jacob Chouinard's shutout bid at 11:33 of the final stanza. Chouinard, who improved to 2-1, made 18 saves for the win.
Evan Deviller, his counterpart at the opposite end of the ice, was saddled with the loss despite a 66-save performance.
Seven different McGill players found the back of the net, including rookie
Jan Kaminsky, who also collected three helpers.
Other McGill marksmen included freshmen
Carl Gelinas and
Alexandre Comtois, sophomore
Patrick Delisle-Houde on the power-play, and team captain
Benoit Levesque, who tallied an unassisted shorthanded effort.
Despite the lopsided score, the game was a relatively tame one with only five penalties called.
The Redmen went 1-for-1 with the man-advantage and snuffed out all three RMC power plays. After six regular-season games, McGill has killed off 29 of 32 opposition power-plays for a 90.6 per cent success rate.
The winless Paladins (0-7-0) will look to end their losing streak in Ottawa on Saturday evening against the struggling Gee-Gees (2-5-0).
McGill, which leads the OUA East with a 4-1-1 record, will play Concordia (2-1-2) in the 27th annual Ronald Corey Cup game, at the Verdun Auditorium on Saturday night at 8 p.m. The contest was moved last week because the Ed Meagher Arena, Concordia's home rink, is undergoing renovations to its ice-making plant.
