Rams jolt hockey Redmen in overtime

Referee points at Domenic Alberga after scoring winning goal in OT
Box Score
TORONTO -- Freshman Domenic Alberga scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, and added an assist to give Ryerson a 3-2 victory over visiting McGill at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Arena inside Maple Leaf Gardens, Friday.

The result spoiled the official debut to the 138th season of hockey at McGill and was Ryerson's first conquest over the Redmen since a 3-0 shutout on Nov. 22, 2008, snapping a nine-game win streak. It was also Ryerson's first home-ice victory over McGill dating back to a 3-2 decision at St. Mike's Arena on Jan. 13, 1989, snuffing out a 22-game losing streak to McGill, which is now 41-7-1 lifetime against the Rams.

Alberga, a native of Maple, Ont., tallied both of his goals on breakaways, connecting at 1:41 of the first period and 3:52 of overtime.

McGill tied the game twice and both goals came moments after Ryerson took the lead. It took only 25 seconds for Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., to knot the score at 1-1.

Jamie Wise of Stouffville, Ont., put the Rams ahead 2-1 at 17:08 in the opening stanza but Cedric McNicoll of Longueuil, Que., connected on the power-play just 89 seconds later.

After a wide-open first period, the two teams put a defensive stranglehold on each other until overtime.

Goaltender Troy Passingham of Mississauga, Ont., made 26 saves, including a desperation diving stop in overtime, and collected the victory for Ryerson. which had a 30-28 edge in shots. McGill's Andrew Flemming, a senior from Quispamsis, N.B., made 27 saves and took the loss.

The Redmen were 1-for-5 on the power-play and killed off all six shorthanded situations.

Ryerson (1-0)  will host Ottawa (0-1) on Saturday afternoon while McGill (0-1) plays the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-0) on Saturday night at Varsity Arena. The game will be webcast live at 7:30 p.m.
