Box Score
THUNDER BAY, Ont. –
Keith Grondin scored the game-winner at 13:23 of the final period as Lakehead skated past visiting McGill with a 3-2 decision in men's exhibition hockey before an announced crowd of 2,721 at the Fort William Gardens, Friday.
The sophomore forward converted a nifty back-door feed from blueliner Mitch Fillman to snap a 2-2 draw.
Adam Sergerie had given the Thunderwolves a 1-0 lead at 7:31 of the opening period but sophomore
Justin Ducharme of Quebec City, evened the count, unassisted, at 5:03 of the middle frame.
Just 27 seconds later,
Trevor Gamache put Lakehead ahead 2-1 but McGill squared things again when rookie
Max La Sieur of Montreal connected with a shorthanded marker, on a penalty shot at 18:41.
Redmen netminder
Hubert Morin, a fifth-year senior from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., had a stellar game and made 29 saves in a losing cause. Lakehead's
Alex Dupuis kicked aside 22 of 24 shots for the win.
Both sides were held scoreless on the power-play, with Lakehead going 0-for-4, while McGill was 0-for-3.
“I was pretty pleased with our effort considering our hectic journey to get here,” said McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes of his troops who had their Thursday flight out of Montreal cancelled due to a record 45-centimetre snowstorm. The Redmen had to scramble to make alternate travel plans to get to Thunder Bay. Then they got a 3:30 a.m. wake-up call and headed to McConnell Arena to load the team bus, which left at 5 a.m. for Trudeau airport.
Their flight was 90 minutes late before departing, which resulted in the team missing their connecting flight in Toronto. Most of the travelling party managed to get on a noon flight out of Pearson airport but spent more than an hour on the tarmac before taking off for Thunder Bay.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.
REDMEN RAP: The game was delayed about 10 minutes midway through the second period when McGill rookie
Mathieu Pompei, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound centre, was hammered along the boards by Lakehead's
Kalvin Sagert, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound defender. There was no penalty on the play and Pompei, who appeared to suffer an upper-body muscular-type injury, was treated by a St. John's ambulance medical team.
