Box Score MONTREAL - Felix Petit set up four goals as the visiting UQTR Patriotes skated to a 5-2 triumph over McGill in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The result, combined with a 6-5 loss at Concordia on Friday, left the defending national champion Redmen with an 0-2 record to start the season. The last time they dropped their first two games was in 2008-09, where they actually rebounded from an 0-5 start to finish at 18-8-2.
In other words, it's not yet time to hit the panic button for the 137th edition of the Redmen, which may be the oldest program in the world but is also one of the youngest. The team roster features 11 new faces, to go along with five sophomores and a sprinkling of veterans.
UQTR, which outshot McGill 41-27, had three of their five goals produced from defencemen. They broke open a scoreless game in the middle stanza with a pair of early goals from right-winger Antoine Quevillon (2:53) and blueliner Emmanuel Boudreau (5:52).
Undaunted, the Redmen rallied when rookie Patrick Delisle-Houde of Quebec City scored at 8:50 and he then set up a power-play marker at 16:40 by Montrealer Guillaume Monast, a sophomore rearguard who was redshirted last season after playing in the American Hockey League two years ago.
The miracle comeback was short-lived, however, when sophomore rearguard Olivier Hotte regained the lead for the Pats just 77 seconds later.
Pierre-Luc Lessard, a senior defenceman from Thetford Mines, Que., added an insurance marker midway through the final stanza and left-winger Billy Lacasse of Mont Laurier, Que., iced the contest with an empty-netter in the final minute.
Pats netminder Marc-Antoine Gelinas made 25 saves for the win, while Andrew Flemming, a first-year transfer from RMC, registered 36 saves and took the loss in his first official start for McGill.
The Redmen will look to get into the win column next weekend when they host Ottawa (Oct. 12) and Carleton (Oct. 13) as part of Homecoming Week at McGill.
As part of the McGill Homecoming next week, the there will be an official banner-raising ceremony to recognize the CIS national championship won by the Redmen last spring. Among the guests on hand will be Mike Babcock, a former Redmen captain who has made a bigger name for himself for coaching the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup and for guiding Canada to gold at the Vancouver Olympics.
He has been invited to perform the ceremonial face-off for the Oct. 12 game versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees, a team coached by Real Paiement, who patrolled the McGill blueline with Babcock from 1983 to 1985. The next day (Oct. 13), Babcock is slated to be at the McGill Bookstore from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m., for a book signing of his best-seller "Leave No Doubt: a credo for chasing your dreams". Later that evening, he will be the keynote speaker at a dinner and dance for the faculty of physical education and kinesiology, which is celebrating their centennial this year.
REDMEN RAP: Marc-Olivier Vachon, a sophomore centre with the Redmen, had one assist and was an impressive 18-8-1 on his 27 faceoffs... McGill graduate Kyle Hickey, who skated for the Redmen from 2000 to 2002, flew in from Vancouver, B.C., to take in the game. He later dropped by the coach's office to catch up with his former defence partner Dan Jacob, now an assistant coach with the team.
