MONTREAL – Keanu Yamamoto, a McGill University graduate, has signed a one-year contract to play in France. The 30-year-old native of Spokane, Wash., has joined Briançon, one of a dozen teams in the Ligue Magnus.
 
He is one of 15 McGill hockey products currently playing at the pro level, five of them in France. That group includes Mikisiw Awashish (Valenciennes) and a trio with Nice: goaltender Alexis Shank and forwards Alexandre Gagnon and his younger brother Mathieu Gagnon.
 
Other McGill hockey alumni playing professionally include Ryan McKiernan (Rosenheim, Germany), Marc-André Dorion (Gmunden, Austria), Nikolas Brouillard (AHL: Coachella Valley, Calif.), Zach Gallant (AHL: Utica, N.Y.), Mathieu Pompei (Hannover, Germany), Scott Walford (Villacher, Austria), Eric Uba (Löwen Frankfurt, Germany) and Nathanael Halbert (Slovenia), along with Brandon Frattaroli and Patrick Larkin, who both recently signed with Nottingham in the United Kingdom.
 
One of 112 McGillians to play professionally worldwide, Yamamoto will become the 32nd to skate in France and the first to suit up for Briançon. Located at an altitude of 1,326 metres in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France, Briançon is considered one of the highest cities in the country.
 
Yamamoto skated in Scotland for the past two seasons with the Dundee Stars of the Elite Ice Hockey League, the top professional division in the United Kingdom. Prior to that, he spent two seasons in South Dakota with the ECHL's Rapid City Rush, an affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames.
 
A speedy, 5-foot-6, 170-pound forward, Yamamoto graduated from McGill in 2022 with an arts degree, majoring in economics. During his four seasons in the university ranks, he scored 46 goals and 123 points in 142 games overall, along with 122 penalty minutes. In OUA regular-season play, he registered 29 goals and 53 assists for 82 points in 98 games. In the post-season, he tallied nine goals and 21 points in 21 contests.
 
Yamamoto was also selected to a Quebec university all-star team for a preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens rookie squad, earning one assist in a 5-3 loss on Sept. 21, 2021. His younger brother, Kailer Yamamoto, has played the past eight seasons in the NHL with Edmonton, Seattle and Utah.

MONTRÉAL – Keanu Yamamoto, diplômé de l'Université McGill, a signé un contrat d'un an pour jouer en France. L'attaquant de 30 ans, originaire de Spokane, dans l'État de Washington, se joint à Briançon, l'une des 12 équipes de la Ligue Magnus.

Il est l'un des 15 produits du programme de hockey de McGill qui évoluent actuellement chez les professionnels, dont cinq en France. En saison régulière des SUO, il a inscrit 29 buts et 53 aides pour 82 points en 98 rencontres. En séries éliminatoires, il a totalisé neuf buts et 21 points en 21 matchs.

Yamamoto avait également été sélectionné au sein d'une équipe d'étoiles universitaires du Québec pour disputer un match préparatoire contre les recrues des Canadiens de Montréal. Il avait récolté une aide dans une défaite de 5-3, le 21 septembre 2021. Son frère cadet, Kailer Yamamoto, a évolué dans la LNH au cours des huit dernières saisons avec Edmonton, Seattle et Utah.
