TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. - The UQTR Patriotes connected on a pair of
first-period power play opportunities and then rode the back of
rookie netminder Guillaume Nadeau of St. Jean
Chrysostome, Que., en route to a 3-1 upset over No.2 ranked McGill
in men's university hockey at Trois-Rivieres on Wednesday.
It was the first loss in regulation time for the
division-leading Redmen, who tumbled to 8-1-2 in OUA play. The
Patriotes, who improved to 7-4-0, sit four points in arrears of
McGill in the OUA East Division.
McGill had an incredible 33-13 advantage in shots on net,
including a lopsided 17-2 margin in the final period but had a
difficult time solving Nadeau. The former netminder with
Drummondville in the QMJHL made 32 saves and improved to 6-3-0.
Pierre-Luc Lessard of Thetford Mines, Que., and
team captain Alexandre Demers of Laurier Station,
Que., scored at 13:06 and 18:12, respectively to put the Redmen on
their heels. When Billy Lacasse of Mont Laurier,
Que., made it 3-0 at 12:48 of the middle stanza, it looked like
curtains for the Redmen.
But McGill overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Nipissing 4-3 last
Saturday, so there was some hope when sniper Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., connected on the
power-play, with his fourth of the season, at 19:26 to send his
troops into the intermission on a high note. They came out like
gangbusters in the final frame but were stoned time and time again
by Nadeau, who was selected as the game's first star.
The Patriotes went 2-for-7 on the power-play while McGill
connected one of eight chances.
Redmen goalie Hubert Morin of St. Georges de
Beauce, Que., recorded 10 saves on 13 shots in taking the loss. His
record fell to 4-2.
McGill plays at Queen's (5-3-1) in Kingston, Ont., on Nov. 11,
while the Patriots are visiting the Toronto Varsity Blues
(4-4-1).
