MONTREAL - Alexandre Picard-Hooper of
Boucherville, Que., capped a comeback as the No.4-ranked McGill
Redmen rallied for a 3-2 victory over visiting Concordia in OUA
hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The win, which avenged a 3-2 overtime loss at Concordia last
Sunday, was McGill's 11th in the last 12 confrontations against
their cross-town rivals and improved the team's lifetime record to
82-90-14 overall, since they first clashed in 1975.
Picard-Hooper, the CIS player of the year last season,
redirected a nifty pass from linemate Andrew Wright for the winning tally at 5:42 of the final
period.
The Stingers had taken a 2-0 lead after the opening period on
goals by veterans George Lovatsis (4:14) of
Markham, Ont., and Alexandre Monahan (10:55) of
Mascouche, Que.
But the Redmen roared back in the middle stanza to knot the
score at 2-2.
Team captain Evan Vossen of Swift Current,
Sask., put McGill on the scoreboard at the 52-second mark of the
final period, picking the top left corner behind Stingers netminder
Nicholas Champion.
Less than three minutes later, rookie Guillaume Langelier-Parent of Lery, Que., netted the equalizer by
firing a wicked wrist shot to the top right corner past
Champion. The rookie goalie from Labrador City,
Nfld., ended up making 39 saves in a losing cause.
Redmen netminder Mark Segal, a freshman from
Vancouver, B.C., who played for the WHL's Vancouver Giants, was
credited with 25 saves and upped his record to 3-1.
McGill, which improved to 5-0-2 in league play, will travel to
Ottawa on Sunday to play the Gee-Gees (2-3-1), who are now coached
by Real Paiement, a former McGill defenceman and
assistant coach. The game is slated to be webcast live on www.ssncanada.ca at 2 p.m.
Eastern.
The Stingers (3-3-2) are off until Nov. 4 when they will host
Ryerson.
REDMEN RAP: McGill sniper Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., picked up 17
penalty-minutes in the win over Concordia and will have to serve an
automatic one-game suspension for receiving a fighting major. He is
now tied with Redmen assistant coach Daniel Jacob
for second place on the team's all-time penalty leaders list with
530 PIMs in 143 games. Verreault-Paul who has played in only 127
contests over four seasons and has another year of eligibility, is
290 minutes shy of the school record of 820 set by defenceman
Yan Turcotte in 187 games from 2005 to 2010.
