TORONTO - Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., and Andrew Wright
of Toronto, each scored twice and added an assist as No.6-ranked
McGill skated to an 8-5 victory over Ryerson, to complete a
two-game sweep over Rams at the George Bell Arena, Saturday. McGill
also skunked Ryerson 7-0 on Friday.
The Redmen improved to 35-6-1 lifetime against Ryerson and
extended their 15-year road win streak against the Rams to 14
consecutive games, dating back to a 4-3 loss at Varsity Arena on
Feb. 4, 1994. McGill's last loss at Ryerson's home arena was a 3-2
decision on Jan. 13, 1989.
It was a command performance from Vossen, a 23-year-old
industrial relations junior, who has already surpassed his career
high in goals, assists and points. The six-foot, 190-pound left
winger bounced back strong from being cut above the lip for a
half-dozen stitches when struck in the face by an errant slapshot
in Friday's 7-0 win over Ryerson. He assisted on McGill's first
goal in the opening period, snuffed a Ryerson rally to make the
score 6-3 in the second stanza and halted another Rams comeback to
give the Redmen a 7-5 advantage in the final frame.
McGill jumped into an early 3-0 lead on power-play goals by
Simon Marcotte-Légaré of Longueuil, Que., and Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., plus a shorthanded effort by
Christophe Longpré-Poirier, a freshman from Longueuil.
The Rams replied at 17:02 on a goal by Alexei Dostoinov, when
native of Moscow, who played for the Kitchener Rangers of the
OHL.
But the Redmen bounced back for two more before the period was
over. Sophomore Maxime Langelier-Parent, also from Longueuil jumped
on a turnover and tallied an unassisted effort at 17:22. Some 83
seconds later, Wright then made it 5-1 with his first marker of the
night.
To Ryerson's credit, they fought back to narrow the gap to 6-4
in the middle period, which featured four late goals in the last
four minutes and 20 seconds. Marcus Booth, Dostoinov and Greg Payne
scored for the Rams and Vossen replied for McGill.
Ryerson threw a scare into the Redmen when defenceman Scott
Madden made it a one-goal game only two minutes into the final
period. But Vossen's seventh goal of the season, on the power play
at 9:12 put McGill back in control and Wright added an
empty-netter at 19;27 with his fourth of the season.
McGill outshot Ryerson 51-37 as sophomore goaltender Hubert Morin of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., registered the win and
improved his record to 9-1 in 11 starts. For the Rams, Louie George
started, was replaced by Paul Gibson after the opening period but
was sent back into the tempest after Gibson suffered an apparent
knee injury midway through the period. George was beaten seven
times and was saddled with the loss, falling to 4-6.
McGill ends the semester second in the OUA East Conference with
a stellar 12-2 record, including a 6-0 record at home. They sit
five points behind division-leading UQTR (14-2-1), with three games
in hand on the Patriotes.
The Redmen are have a 23-day break for exams before resuming
play with four games in western Canada to conclude a sequence of
nine consecutive road games. They have scheduled a pair of
non-conference games against the No.2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears
in Edmonton, Dec. 28-29, then head over the Rockies to play a pair
of games against UBC (Jan. 2-3) at the Doug Mitchell Winter Sports
Centre, their new arena built for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
REDMEN RAP: Francis Verreault-Paul leads the
OUA in goals with 15, including a league-high five game-winners...
He also ranks second in penalty minutes (63)... Alex
Picard-Hooper leads the league in assists (20)...
Guillaume Doucet, who has 11 markers, is tied for
the league lead in insurance goals with 3... Defenceman
Marc-Andre Dorion, who attended the Dallas Stars
rookie camp last year, leads all OUA blueliners in points with
4-16-20 in 14 games... Defenceman Yan Turcotte is
ranked fifth in points and third in goals with a career-best 6-8-14
record... McGill's 12-2 league record is five wins better than the
7-7 mark that they posted at this time last year, when they
finished at 18-8-2. The team is on pace to surpass the school
record for most wins in regular season play, which occurred in
1999-90, when they posted a 21-5 dossier... The Redmen are leading
the 19-team OUA in goals scored with 89 in 14 contests for an
average of 6.36 goals per game. The team record is 173 in 26 games
during the 1988-89 season, when they averaged 6.65 per game. That
season, McGill posted a 19-4-3 record... Defensively, the Redmen
have allowed only 36 goals for a GAA of 2.57, the third-best
average in the league behind UQTR (2.35) and Western (2.44)...
McGill has the second-best penalty-killing unit in the OUA (88.9
per cent) and the fifth-best power-play (21.6).
