MONTREAL - Sophomore forward Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteviatsh, Que., scored twice and
added a helper as No.5-ranked McGill doubled the Carleton Ravens in
OUA men's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.
The Redmen improved to 5-0 in the OUA East and remain one of
three undefeated teams in Canada, along with UQTR (7-0) and UNB
(6-0).
McGill outshot Carleton 44-31 as freshman goaltender
Hunter Shaw of Penticton, B.C., made 31 saves to
register his second career CIS victory in as many starts.
McGill led 1-0 after the opening stanza on a goal by Longueuil,
Que., native Simon Marcotte-Légaré at 13:09.
Verreault-Paul gave McGill a 2-0 lead at 7:14 of the middle
period, then added a power-play marker which made it 3-1 early in
the third, which proved to be the game-winner. He also assisted on
an empty-netter by Alexandre Picard-Hooper of
Boucherville, Que., to put the game out of reach.
The two Raven markers were scored by Shane
Bakker of Navan, Ont., and Ryan Berard of
Niagara Falls, Ont.
McGill is now 11-10-1 lifetime against the Ravens in a series
that began during the 1960s but was dormant for 33 years until
Carleton revived their program four years ago. Since the Ravens
were reborn, McGill has posted a 9-2 record in 11 meetings, with
48-24 margin in goals. Carleton, 4-4-0 in the OUA East
Carleton, which dropped to 4-4 in the OUA East Conference and
trail the Redmen by two points in the standings, will host
Nipissing in the front end of a home-and-home series on Nov. 6.
The Redmen will attempt to stretch their win streak to six when
they play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-3-1) on Sunday at 2
p.m.
The game against U of T is designated as McGill's annual "Minor
Hockey Day" and will feature a number of mini-games played during
each intermission. Admission is free of charge to all minor hockey
players who arrive with their team jersey.
REDMEN RAP: The entire McGill team will be at
the Bell Centre on Friday to see the AHL game between and Hamilton,
the Montreal Canadiens top farm team, which features three former
Redmen captains, including head coach Guy Boucher,
assistant coach Martin Raymond and left-winger
Mathieu Darche, who leads the Bulldogs in scoring
with a 7-2-9 record in 11 games... No word yet on whether any of
them will be wearing their alma mater's tie, like Detroit's
Mike Babcock did during the Stanley Cup
playoffs... Hamilton, the only AHL team that has yet to lose in
regulation time, owns a 7-0-1 record... The contest is slated for a
7:30 p.m. faceoff and tickets range from $5 to $34.
