MONTREAL - Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask.,
scored four goals and added a helper as No.7-ranked McGill trounced
Queen's 10-1 in men's university hockey at McConnell Arena,
Friday.
It improved McGill's record to 3-0 in OUA play and marked the
first four-goal game by a member of the Redmen in more than a
decade, since David Burgess accomplished the feat
in a 7-1 victory over Toronto, Nov. 14, 1998.
Vossen, a six-foot, 190-pound left winger who now has five goals
in three games, only tallied seven times all of last year and had
just four goals in his freshman campaign. The 23-year-old
industrial relations junior snapped a scoreless draw at 1:41 of the
second stanza. He set up Guillaume Doucet's marker
15 minutes later to give McGill a 4-1 lead, then made it 5-1 at
19:50 of the period. He then added back-to-back markers at 11:55
and 17:36 of the third to give the Redmen a commanding 8-1
lead.
Doucet, a junior from Anjou, Que., had a five-point soiree to
match Vossen's totals.
Vossen's final tally, at 17:36, sparked a three-goal outburst in
17 seconds with Swiss native Tim Drager connecting
at 17:46 and freshman Jean-Francois Boisvert of
Mirabel, Que., striking at 17:53. It snapped a 75-year-old school
record (three goals in 30 seconds) that had been in the books since
a 12-2 victory over Harvard on Jan. 8, 1934.
Boisvert finished with a pair, including his first career CIS
goal, a feat also accomplished by Drager.
McGill dominated from start to finish and had a resounding 44-14
margin in shots on net, scoring all 10 goals on beleaguered Gaels
netminder Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont.,
whose record fell to 2-3.
Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg counted the lone
Queen's goal, a shorthanded effort which made the score 3-1 midway
through the middle period.
With Redmen goaltender Hubert Morin not dressed
due to illness, sophomore Danny Mireault
made his first appearance since a Sept. 26 preseason game at UNB,
made 12 saves and received credit for the win but was felled by a
hard shot on the upper chest area with seven minutes remaining and
had to be replaced by freshman Hunter Shaw. The
19-year-old from Penticton, B.C., was called upon to make only one
save.
Despite the lopsided score, the Redmen failed to score a power
play goal for the third straight contest, going 0-for-7. McGill has
outscored opponents 20-4 in league play but are 0-for-20 on the
power play.
Queen's (2-3) plays at Concordia (0-7) on Saturday afternoon,
while McGill (3-0) plays host to RMC (2-2-1) at 2 p.m. That contest
will be a mini-Homecoming for a trio of former McGill players now
members of the Paladins, including defenceman Ken
Morin, who played for the Red and White from 2005 to 2009,
serving as team captain last year, plus head coach Adam
Shell (1999-03) and assistant coach Chad
Blundy (2000-05).
REDMEN RAP: McGill has now won 15 consecutive
meetings with Queen's since a 5-2 setback in Kingston on Feb. 6,
2004. The Redmen have prevailed in 54 of the last 59
confrontations with their arch-rivals and now lead the all-time
series versus the Gaels with a 107-50-2 record dating back more
than a century to 1895.
