MONTREAL – Basketball players Adrian Hynes-Guery of Pierrefonds, Que., and Anneth Him-Lazarenko, a native of Panama City who was raised in Ste. Dorothee, Que.,  are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending March 3, 2013.

Hynes-Guery, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound point-guard on the Redmen, scored 48 points in two playoff victories as the Redmen captured the RSEQ championship with a 72-43 victory over UQAM on Feb. 27 and a 77-74 come-from-behind win over Bishop’s on March 2, to qualify for the CIS Final Eight championship in Ottawa, March 8-10. The 25-year-old physical education major shot 37.1 per cent from the field (13/35), 36.4 from three-point range and a stellar 90 per cent from the free-throw line (18/20). He tallied 24 points in each game and added a combined seven assists, three steals and one blocked shot. A first-year transfer from the NCAA’s American International College, he is a product of Dawson College.

Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 power forward on the Martlets, scored 22 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in two playoff wins as the McGill women also captured the RSEQ championship, posting a 54-47 victory over Laval on Feb. 27 and a 51-48 decision over Concordia on March 2, to qualify for the CIS Final Eight championship in Regina, March 15-17. The 25-year-old elementary education senior shot 42.9 per cent from the field (9/21) and made four of seven attempts from the free-throw line. She registered a “double-double” in the league championship game and over the two games, had a combined total of seven assists, three steals and one blocked shot. The fifth-year veteran enrolled at McGill in 2008 out of Vanier College.
