MONTREAL – Hockey player
Scott Walford of Coquitlam, B.C., and artistic swimmer
Diana Paparelli, a native of France, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending March 17, 2024.
Walford, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound all-star defenceman on the men's hockey team, merited tournament all-star honours after leading the McGill Redbirds to a 2-1 record and a bronze medal finish at the U SPORTS University Cup national championship in Toronto last week. The 25-year-old economics senior earned four assists in three games, setting up the tying and winning goals in the last seven minutes of the bronze medal game, a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over host Toronto Metropolitan University. A third-round selection by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft, Walford was recruited to McGill in 2020 out of the Western Hockey League, where he played for Victoria and Saskatoon. An alternate captain with the Redbirds, he tallied 33 points, including four goals, in 32 games overall this season. Walford will graduate this spring with an 11-60-71 lifetime record in 90 contests over his three seasons.
Paparelli, a 21-year-old senior, was named the top individual all-around athlete in the novice category to help McGill win the Canadian University Artistic Swim League national championship in Winnipeg last weekend. An art history and anthropology major, she produced a pair of gold medal performances, along with one silver. She finished first in the novice duet routine and was part of the winning novice team routine. Her silver medal effort was in the novice solo routine. Paparelli hails from Biot, a medieval hilltop village in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur near Antibes, between Nice and Cannes.
