MONTREAL –
Victor Paradis of Montreal and
Giselle De Leon from Lavaltrie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Sept. 22, 2024.
Paradis, a rookie starter at defensive back with the football Redbirds, registered a game-high eight solo tackles and added a pair of key knockdowns in McGill's 21-17 upset victory at Concordia last Saturday. The result snapped the team's six-game losing streak to the Stingers, dating back to 2019. A 20-year-old geography freshman, Paradis currently leads McGill's defence and ranks third in third among RSEQ conference defensive leaders with 23 total tackles, 18 of them solo, in four games. The six-foot, 190-pound inside halfback is a product of College Andre-Grasset.
De Leon, a 5-foot-8 defender with the soccer Martlets, was named as McGill's player of the game in a 0-0 stalemate with visiting Sherbrooke last week. A bioengineering junior, she turns 21 years old on Sept. 26. De Leon has been a starter at centreback for every game this season, where her shutdown skills have helped McGill allow just four goals against in seven games, the second-best defensive record in the eight-team RSEQ conference. A product of Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que., she spends her summers playing with Club Soccer Longueuil, a semi-pro team in the Québec League 1.
McGill athlete of the week award recipients receive a gift certificate from Poulet Rouge, serving healthy and nutritious meals since 2017. All students can get a 15% discount at the Poulet Rouge McGill location upon presentation of their student ID card.
