MONTREAL – Matthew Beaudet of Montreal and Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Oct. 31, 2021.
 
Beaudet, a 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner with the McGill cross-country team, finished first of 94 entries to win gold in the men's division at the RSEQ  university championship meet on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City, Saturday. The 21-year-old electrical engineering sophomore became the first McGill male in 16 years to win the Quebec league's individual title. Beaudet, a product of Marianopolis College, completed the eight-kilometre loop in 24 minutes, 37 seconds, crossing the finish line five seconds ahead of the next closest runner.
 
Deguire, a 5-foot-8 goaltender with the McGill women’s hockey team, registered a stingy 0.50 goals-against average and a .986 save percentage, stopping 69 of 70 shots as the Martlets opened their regular season with two victories last week The 24-year-old master’s student in kinesiology made 33 saves on the road in a 5-0 shutout over the Montreal Carabins (Oct. 29) and added 36 stops in a 2-1 home-ice victory over Concordia (Oct. 31). A product of Champlain College in Lennoxville, Deguire enrolled at McGill in 2016 and is a three-time RSEQ all-star at the university level.
