Clement Secchi a native of Aix-en-Provence in France, and
Elizabeth Hirsch of Melrose, Mass., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Oct. 27, 2019.
Secchi, a 19-year-old management sophomore, was named swimmer of the meet as McGill captured the first Quebec Cup competition of the season, held Saturday at the university’s Memorial Pool. The 5-foot-10, 140-pound sprinter collected a meet-high three gold medals and one silver. He won both the 50-metre backstroke (0:25.16) and the 100m back (0:54.03), meeting U SPORTS qualifying standards in both. Secchi also helped the 4x50 freestyle relay squad finish atop the podium in 1:31.64. His silver-medal result was in the 200 individual medley (2:01.20).
Hirsch, a 5-foot-7 distance runner, registered a silver-medal finish and led the cross-country Martlets to place first of eight universities at the RSEQ championship meet on the Plains of Abraham, last Saturday. It marked the team's first Quebec league banner since 2016. The 21-year-old biology senior finished second of 79 entries in the eight kilometre race, posting a time of 30 minutes, six seconds. She was just two seconds behind race winner
Elodie De Coene of the Montreal Carabins. The Martlets, who have won four of their five meets this season, scored a combined 41 points to edge out the second-place Carabins by only three points.
