MONTREAL –
Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., and
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Nov. 10, 2019.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard with the men's basketball team, scored a career-high 36 points as McGill overpowered Laval 101-78 to officially open their 119th regular season last Thursday. He shot a superb 68.4 per cent from the field (13/19), including a 5-for-10 performance from three-point territory and was a perfect 5-for-5 in free-throw shooting. The 21-year-old physical education junior added seven rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals in 31 minutes of court-time. His 36-point tally was the most by a McGill player in 14 years, since
Denburk Reid tallied 37 points in a 77-72 loss at Laval on Feb. 11, 2005.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the women's volleyball squad, scored a combined 35.5 points in two games, a 3-1 victory at Ottawa last Friday and a 3-2 loss at Laval on Sunday. A 23-year old physical education senior, Vercheval registered 34 kills, one service ace, and one assisted stuff block in nine sets, in addition to 25 digs and a pair of assists on defence. A product of Collège Edouard-Montpetit, Vercheval is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder who enrolled at McGill in 2016.
