MONTREAL –
Clement Secchi, from Aix-en-Province in southern France, and
Sirah Diarra of Longueuil, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Nov. 24, 2019.
Secchi, a 19-year-old management sophomore, was named swimmer of the meet after leading McGill to a first-place finish of six teams at the Quebec Cup competition hosted by Laval, Sunday. The 5-foot-10, 140-pound sprinter scored a meet-high 652 points on the FINA scale, winning four gold medals, while breaking two school records. He rewrote the 100-metre freestyle record on his leadoff leg of the gold-medal winning 4x100 relay, registering a sizzling 49.10 seconds to erase the school mark of 49.37, set in 2012. That relay also posted a school record time of 3:20.03 to surpass a seven-year-old mark of 3:20.85. His other gold medal performances occurred in the 200 backstroke (1:58.77), 100 butterfly (54.03) and the 4x100 medley relay (3:41.60).
Diarra, a 6-foot-1 centre with the women's basketball team, scored 32 points and pulled down 20 rebounds in two games last week, including a "double-double" in a 58-55 win over Concordia on Saturday. The 24-year-old social work sophomore added three steals, a pair of blocked shots and three assists. Diarra shot an impressive 50 per cent from the floor (12/24), a stellar 57.1 in three-point shooting (4/7), and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. A second-year transfer from Clemson University, she previously played for Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que.
