MONTREAL –
Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y., and
Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, in Guinea, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Jan. 12, 2013.
McKiernan, a six-foot,194-pound defenceman with the men's hockey team, scored four points, including a pair of goals as McGill won two key games last week, moving them back into the race for first place. The 23-year-old finance junior tallied twice in a 3-2 road win over division-leading Carleton last Friday. Two days earlier, he earned a pair of assists, including one on the winning goal in overtime of a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Concordia. A two-time Academic All-Canadian, McKiernan is currently second among OUA defenceman in goals with six and is ranked fifth in points with 17 in 19 games. Before joining the Redmen in 2010, he previously played in the QMJHL for Guy Boucher’s Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Sylla, a six-foot-one, rookie centre with the women's basketball team, scored 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in two games as McGill easily defeated No.8-ranked Concordia (75-44) last Thursday and then knocked off Laval on Saturday. She shot 40.7 per cent from the field (11/27) and 72.2 from the free-throw line (13/18), to go along with a pair of blocked shots and a steal. The 20-year-old pharmacology freshman registered a “double-double” with a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds as McGill rallied to defeat Laval 71-62. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred for College Montmorency.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
