MONTREAL – Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., and  Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 26, 2020.
 
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the women's volleyball squad, scored a combined 50.5 points in two critical road victories last week that kept McGill's playoff hopes alive, a 3-1 decision at Ottawa last Friday and a 3-1 conquest at UQAM on Sunday. A 23-year old physical education senior, Vercheval registered 39 kills, eight service aces and 3.5 stuff block in eight sets. She also had 20 digs on defence. A product of Collège Edouard-Montpetit, Vercheval is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder who enrolled at McGill in 2016.
 
Guindon, a 6-foot-1 goaltender, saved 62 of 64 shots with a lofty .969 save percentage and a stingy 0.95 goals-against average as the McGill men's hockey team earned a split in his two games last week, a 1-0 overtime loss at UQTR (Jan. 23) and a 6-1 win over Nipissing (Jan. 25). The 24-year-old master's student in exercise physiology currently ranks first in the country with a stellar .948 save percentage and is eighth in the nation with a 2.13 goals-against average.  He owns a lifetime record of 55-29-0 in league play and is one victory shy of the McGill goalie record for most career wins. With 5,062 minutes played and 2,338 saves in 86 regular season games, Guindon recently broke school records in each of those categories.
