MONTREAL – Quarry Whyne of Montreal and Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Dec. 1, 2019.
 
Whyne, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard with the men’s basketball team, scored 36 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as McGill defeated both Laval (90-75) and Bishop’s (79-73) last weekend, improving their record to 4-1 atop the RSEQ conference. The 21-year-old economics sophomore added 10 assists and four steals while averaging 33 minutes played. He shot 48.3 per cent from the field (14-for-29), went 4-for-11 from three-point range and connected on four of nine free-throws. A product out of Vanier College, Whyne currently leads McGill in scoring with an average of 14.5 points per game in regular season play.
 
Deguire, a 5-foot-8 netminder with the women’s hockey team, registered a 22-save shutout as seventh-ranked McGill blanked the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 last Saturday, improving their record to 4-3-3 in league play. The 22-year-old kinesiology senior leads the Quebec conference in goals-against average (1.49), save percentage (.946), saves (245), shutouts (2), and minutes played (562:13). Recruited out of Champlain College, she ranks third in wins with a 4-5 record in nine starts this season and owns a lifetime 63-45-1 record with 21 shutouts in 113 career contests overall as a member of the Martlets.
