MONTREAL – Track and field runners
Matthew Beaudet of Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace borough, and
Donna Ntambue of Montreal-North are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending March 12, 2023.
Beaudet, a 22-year-old electrical engineering junior, broke a school record while winning bronze at the U SPORTS indoor track and field championships in Saskatoon over the weekend. It was the Redbirds first medal at Nationals since 2016. On Saturday, the 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner finished third the 3,000-metre race in eight minutes, 9.62 seconds, shaving about nine seconds off the previous McGill record of 8:18.75 that he set earlier in the season. Beaudet also finished eighth in the 1,500m (4:05.28) and was part of the 4x800 relay that finished 11th (7:52.69).
Ntambue, an NCAA transfer and first-year economics student, helped the Martlets win a bronze, their first 4x200m relay medal in school history at the U SPORTS indoor track and field championships. The 5-foot-9 sprinter ran leadoff on the quartet which crossed the finish line in 1:41.47, fractions shy of the team record (1:41.18). The 21-year-old Ntambue also finished sixth in the 60m sprint, crossing the finish line in 7.46 seconds, a mark that matched the third fastest time in team history.
