Lauren Minns from Notre Dame de Grace, Que., and
Jonas Press from Toronto are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 4, 2023.
Minns, a 5-foot-5 rugby star who plays on the back row, scored three tries as McGill rallied for a 22-13 victory over visiting Bishop's to open the women's rugby season last Thursday. A third-year master's student in law, she opened the scoring with a try on a 40-yard run in the seventh minute of play. Minns added two more tries in the final nine minutes of the game, scoring on a 53-yard run down the left sideline and a 17-yard run up the middle. The 26-year-old Montrealer transferred to McGill in 2021 after earning a civil law degree from the University of Ottawa. With the Gee-Gees, she was voted RSEQ rookie of the year in 2017 and merited all-conference honours in 2019.
Press, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound outfielder, helped the McGill men's baseball team win five of six games over the weekend to capture the Labour Day Classic, a three-day preseason tournament held in Ottawa, Sept. 2-4. Over his six games, the 20-year-old political science sophomore scored a tournament-leading 19 runs and had 12 runs batted in, with a double, two triples and a home run. He batted .476, with 10 hits in 21 at bats, to go along with four walks and one hit by pitch.
