MONTREAL --
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., and
Jerome Verrier of Drummondville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan.21, 2018.
Deguire, a 5-foot-8 goaltender with the Martlets hockey team, stopped 53 of 56 shots for a stingy .946 save percentage and a superb 1.38 goals-against average as McGill swept a pair of key road games in the nation's capital last week. They won 5-2 at Carleton on Friday and 2-1 in an overtime shootout against Ottawa, Saturday. A 23-year-old science sophomore who is majoring in kinesiology, she saved 33 of 34 shots in 70 minutes against the Gee-Gees, then kicked out four of five in the shootout. Her goals-against average dropped to 1.96 in league play, while her save percentage improved to .926. A product of Champlain College in Lennoxville, Que., Deguire was named both RSEQ and U SPORTS rookie of the year in 2016-17. Earlier this month, she played for the Canadian national development team at the Nations Cup tournament in Germany.
Verrier, a six-foot, 196-pound centre with the No.5-ranked hockey Redmen, scored twice in two games as division-leading McGill split back-to-back games last weekend. He netted both of his goals, including the winner in a 4-0 win over the visiting Carleton Ravens last Friday. The 23-year-old economics junior sits second in the OUA scoring race with 34 points, including 10 goals, in 24 contests. He has either scored or assisted on 36 per cent of McGill's goals this season (34/95). Prior to enrolling at McGill, Verrier played four seasons in the QMJHL with Drummondville and Quebec, then was invited to NHL training camps with Winnipeg (2014) and Detroit (2015).
