Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., and
Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan.14, 2017.
Ogundokun, a 6-foot-3, 226-pound guard with the basketball Redmen, scored 35 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as division-leading McGill stretched their win streak to five after sweeping back-to-back games against second-place Concordia, winning 88-81 on the road last Thursday and 91-62 at home on Saturday. The 23-year-old management senior shot a lofty 52 per cent from the floor (12-for-23), including a stellar 40 per cent effort from three-point range (6-for-15). He drained five of seven free-throws and added three steals along with one assist. He is currently ranked third among league leaders in point (13.6) and fifth in rebounds (6.0) per game.
Potvin, a 5-foot-10 guard with the basketball Martlets, reached double figures for the 13th consecutive outing and 18th time in 20 games overall. She tallied 33 points and eight rebounds as the No.2 ranked Martlets extended their win streak to nine after sweeping a pair of games from Concordia, winning 70-55 on the road last Thursday and 63-51 at home on Saturday. The 23-year-old social work senior shot 38 per cent from the floor (13-for-34), went 2-for-11 from three-point territory and sank five of six free-throws. She added seven assists and a pair of steals. Potvin accounted for 27 per cent of the team's 123 points scored. She currently leads the Quebec league in free-throw shooting at 89.3 per cent (25/28), is ranked fourth in points (14.3) and second in steals (2.1) per game. She also ranks fourth among league in assists, averaging 3.3 per contest.
