Samuel Wang of Sherbrooke, Que., and
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 26, 2017.
Wang, a 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter, was named male swimmer-of-the-meet in back-to-back RSEQ competitions over the weekend and became the first person in McGill history to receive that honour in all four regular season meets. The 21-year biochemistry sophomore won six gold medals, one silver and a bronze in addition to breaking an RSEQ conference record in the prelims of the 50m butterfly (23.81), as McGill finished second in Quebec Cup 3 and first in Quebec Cup 4 competitions held at the
Université de Montréal's CEPSUM pool, Nov. 25-26. Wang finished atop the podium in the 50m freestyle (23:11), 50m backstroke (25.65), 100m backstroke (55.11), 50m butterfly (24.25), 100 butterfly (53.92) and helped the winning 4x100 freestyle relay (3:22.84). He also guided the 4x100 medley relay to a second-place finish (3:43.40) and the 4x200 medley relay to a third-place result.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored a team-leading 33 points in a pair of victories last week, helping second-place McGill improve to 8-2 in the RSEQ conference. The 21-year old physical education sophomore registered 28 kills and five service aces in eight sets. She also collected 13 digs and a pair of assists as McGill swept Sherbrooke 3-0 at home last Friday and then came away with a 3-2 home victory over No.9 ranked Laval on Sunday. A product of College Edouard Montpetit, she is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder and enrolled at McGill in 2016.
