MONTREAL -- Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., and Jessica Porfilio of Longueuil, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Sept. 16, 2012.
Pompei, a speedy 5-foot-8, 165-pound centre with the McGill men's hockey team exploded for a hat-trick in his first-ever game at the CIS level as McGill opened their 137th campaign with a 5-1 preseason win over Royal Military College at McConnell Arena, Friday. The 20-year-old elementary education freshman tallied back-to-back markers in the first 10 minutes of the second period to put the Redmen ahead 4-0. He completed his hat-trick with the game's final goal at 14:07 of the final stanza. A product of King's Edgehill School in Windsor, N.S., Pompei played for Yarmouth of the Maritimes Junior A Hockey League before joining the Redmen this fall.
Porfilio, a 5-foot-2 distance runner on the women's track and field team, finished second of 170 runners as the Martlets captured the McGill Open meet, for the second consecutive year, on Mt. Royal, Saturday. The 20-year-old nursing sophomore completed the four-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 15 seconds, only five seconds behind race winner Amanda Truelove of the Western Mustangs. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Porfilio studied at Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
