MONTREAL – Kade Wist of Calgary, Alta., and Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 12, 2017.

Wist, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound freestyle and butterfly specialist with the Redmen swim team, captured three gold medals and led McGill to a second-place finish at the RSEQ conference championships in Quebec City last weekend. The 18-year-old economics sophomore set a personal best by more than four seconds in his winning 400-metre freestyle, stopping the clock in 3:54.97. He also finished atop the podium in the 200 butterfly (2:01.91) and anchored the winning 4x200 freestyle relay in 7:29.61. A product of Western Canada high school in Calgary, Wist is following in the footsteps of his mother Andrea Nugent, a Canadian olympic medalist and McGill graduate who was inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Daoust, a 5-foot-6 centre with the hockey Martlets, scored points on three of the team's four goals in a 4-0 shutout over the No.8-ranked Montreal Carabins to clinch first place in the RSEQ conference last Saturday. The 25-year-old physical education senior tallied the second goal of the game and collected assists on each of the last two markers. She leads the league in scoring with 27 points, including 10 goals in 16 games. A product of College Edouard-Montpetit, Daoust helped Canada win gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
