MONTREAL -- Jennifer Silver of Montreal, Que., and Findlay Brown of Winnipeg, Man., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Sept. 23, 2016.
Silver, a 5-foot-11 forward with the basketball Martlets, was named Tournament MVP as McGill swept Laurentian (59-44), Dalhousie (79-50) and Waterloo (77-64) to win the 22nd annual Redbird Classic invitational tournament at Love Competition Hall, over the weekend. The 22-year-old medical school senior scored a tourney-leading 39 points to go along with 26 rebounds, eight steals, four assists and two blocked shots. She shot a red-hot 57.6 per cent from the field (19/33) and went 1-for-3 from the foul-line.
Brown, a freshman place-kicker with the football Redmen, nailed four field-goals with a perfect performance as McGill kept alive their playoff hopes with a 21-8 road victory in the rain at Concordia last Saturday. Brown, an 18-year-old management major out of Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg, accounted for 13 of McGill's 21 points, going 4-for-4 in field-goals from distances of 20, 20, 19 and 36 yards, respectively. The 5-foot-10, 172-pounder also converted a touchdown run which put the Redmen ahead 10-0 midway through the first quarter. Brown averaged 37.8 yards on nine punts and 45.0 yards on two kickoffs. He is currently ranked third in the RSEQ scoring race with an average of 9.1 points per game.
