Melanie Myrand of Lachine, Que., and
Jenning Leung, a native of Los Banos, in the Philippines, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 1, 2015.
Myrand, a 5-foot-3 distance runner with the cross-country Martlets, won gold and was named female athlete of the year at the RSEQ championship meet in Grand-Mere, Que., Saturday. The fifth-year senior completed the six-kilometre circuit in 21 minutes, 38 seconds to finish first of 71 runners. A 30-year-old master's student in nursing, she was 31 seconds ahead of
her next closest competitor. it marked her fourth podium finish in four meets this season, three of them golden. A product of John Abbott College, Myrand graduated from McGill with a science degree in 2010 but returned last year to further her education.
Leung, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound junior point guard with the basketball Redmen, was named MVP of the Jack Donohue tournament in Ottawa over the weekend, guiding McGill to respective victories over UNB (91-84), York (90-67) and Ottawa (74-70). A 20-year-old psychology major, he registered 46 points with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals over the three days. He shot 41.7 per cent from the floor (15/36), 28.6 from three-point range (6/21) and 76.9 from the charity stripe (10/13).
Leung made the Redmen as a walk-on in 2013 out of Brent International School in Manila.
