MONTREAL –
Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, the capital city of Guinea, is the McGill University female athlete of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Mar. 8, 2015. There was no male nominee. It marks the sixth time in 22 weeks during the 2014-15 school session that she has won this award.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the basketball Martlets, tallied 47 points and grabbed 25 rebounds as top-seeded McGill swept two playoff games over Laval (70-57) and UQAM (53-51) to capture the RSEQ Final Four championship at Lennoxville, Que., last week.
She registered "double-doubles" in both games and tallied a career-high 25 points, including the winning basket in the dying seconds of the gold medal game on Saturday as McGill erased a five-point deficit to edge Laval by two points. Over the two games, the 22-year-old pharmacology junior shot a sizzling 61.3 per cent from the field (19/31) and drained an impressive 9 of 11 shots from the free-throw line (81.8%). She was also credited with three steals and one blocked shot.
Sylla, a co-captain with the Martlets and a two-time member of the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, received a commendation from Governor-General
David Johnston last fall among the CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadians for having achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.63 out of 4 in the faculty of science. At McGill's athletic banquet last April, she merited the Uldis Auders Memorial Trophy as most outstanding sophomore student-athlete.
Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the Quebec CEGEP league for College Montmorency.
