Zach Bye of Greenwich, Conn., and
Alexandra Hughes-Goyette of Squamish, B.C., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Oct. 20, 2024.
Bye, a 21-year-old Arts freshman on the men's lacrosse team, was involved in eight of 16 goals scored by McGill as the Redbirds swept weekend road games in Kingston and Peterborough, Ont., to win the CUFLA East Division pennant with an unblemished 10-0 record. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound attackman scored six goals and added two assists in the two games. Last Friday, he tallied McGill's fourth marker in a 5-4 win at Queen's. The next day, he exploded for five goals and a pair of helpers in an 11-7 victory at Trent. In 10 regular season contests, Bye scored a league-leading 29 goals and finished second in points with 42. A product of the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, he attended The Hill Academy in Ontario prior to enrolling at McGill this fall.
Hughes-Goyette, a 23-year-old master's student in biochemistry who plays on the women's soccer squad, scored two game-winning goals in a pair of weekend road victories as the Martlets clinched second-place in the RSEQ conference. The 5-foot-9 striker opened the scoring in the 26th minute of a 3-0 victory at Concordia last Friday and was named player of the game. Two days later, she put McGill ahead 2-1 in the 57th minute of a 3-1 victory at UQTR. Hughes-Goyette finished fourth in the league scoring race with seven goals in 14 contests. In her fifth and final year of collegiate eligibility, she is a second-year transfer from UNB..
