Elizabeth Ling of Calgary, Alta., and
Hazem Issa, from Cairo, in Egypt, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Dec. 3, 2023.
Ling, a 21-year-old civil engineering senior, was named female swimmer of the meet as the McGill Martlets finished first of six schools to capture the third RSEQ University Cup competition of the season, held at Trois-Rivieres, Friday. She won four gold medals and was the highest scoring athlete of the meet with 656 points, based on the FINA scale. A 5-foot-4 sprinter, Ling won the 100-metre freestyle (56.25) and 100 backstroke (1:01.99). She also anchored the winning 4x50 medley relay (1:53.49) and the winning 4x50 freestyle relay (1:44.24). Her individual gold men performances met the qualification standards for the U SPORTS national championships, to be hosted by McGill, Mar. 7-9, in Pte. Claire, Que. She is a product of Westmount Charter School in Calgary.
Issa, a 21-year-old civil engineering junior, was named male swimmer of the meet as the McGill Redbirds finished first of six schools to capture the third RSEQ University Cup competition of the season, held at Trois-Rivieres, Friday. He won three gold medals and a silver, in addition to being the highest scoring athlete of the meet with 636 points, based upon the FINA scale. The 6-foot-5, 212-pound sprinter won the 50m butterfly (24.24), where he met the qualifying standard for Nationals. He also guided McGill to victory in the 4x50 freestyle relay (1:31.78) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:31.25). His silver medal performance occurred in the 100 free (51.51). Issa enrolled at McGill in 2021 after graduating from Brighton College in Abu Dhabi.
