MONTREAL –
Jamal Mayali of Toronto, and
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Nov. 14, 2021.
Mayali, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard, scored a game-high 29 points as the McGill Redbirds officially opened their 120th season of basketball with a 77-62 victory over Concordia on Nov. 11. The 23-year-old political science senior shot 9-for-16 from the field, draining six of a dozen attempted three-pointers. In 29 minutes of court time, he also made five of his six free-throw attempts, pulled down four rebounds and contributed four assists. A product of Bill Crothers secondary school in Toronto, Mayali enrolled at McGill in 2017.
Downie-Landry, a 26-year-old physical and health education senior, scored twice in regulation and added the deciding goal in a shootout as the No.1 ranked McGill women’s hockey team swept a pair of home games last week. Her efforts helped the Martlets extend their win streak to eight, including a perfect 6-0 record in regular season play. The 5-foot-9 centre scored once in a 4-1 decision over Bishop’s on Nov. 12, then added the tying goal and the decisive marker in a 2-1 overtime shootout victory over the Montreal Carabins on Nov. 14. She leads the RSEQ scoring race with 12 points, including five goals, in six games. Downie-Landry graduated with a BA in 2020 but returned last year for a physical education education degree. She enrolled at McGill in 2016 after starring for Dawson College.
