MONTREAL – Hockey’s
Jade Downie-Landry of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and rugby’s
Gaspard Poiré, a native of Versailles, in France, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 26, 2021.
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 centre who turns 26 next week, scored once and added a pair of assists as the visiting McGill women’s hockey team blanked Bishop’s 4-0 to open their preseason schedule at Molson Arena in Lennoxville, Que., Sunday. The physical and health education senior assisted on the game-winning first goal at 16:23 of the opening period and set up the third goal. Then the recently-elected team captain tallied at 2:12 of the final frame to make the score 4-0. A local product from Dawson College, Downie-Landry enrolled at McGill in 2016 and graduated for the first time with an Arts degree in 2021.
Poiré, a 19-year-old economics freshman, scored a pair of tries in his McGill rugby debut, a 29-7 victory over ÉTS, at College Notre Dame, last Saturday. The 5-foot-9, 169-pound fly-half came off the bench to score a pair of second-half tries, one of them on an electric, 40-metre sprint, as visiting McGill overcame a sluggish start that had them leading 7-0 at halftime.
