MONTREAL – Rugby's
Martin Laval, a native of Biarritz, in southwestern France , and soccer's
Stephanie Hill from Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 10, 2023.
Laval, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound outside centre, tallied 18 points to account for 24 per cent of McGill's scoring in a 77-3 victory at Carleton in the RSEQ men's rugby season opener on Sunday. The 21-year-old management and mathematics junior established a single-game team record, converting all nine tries scored by the Redbirds. He broke the school's regular season record of seven conversions set by Monty Weatherall (Sept. 19/22) and also the team's overall record of eight conversions in a playoff game, shared by Matt De Graff (Oct. 31/04) and Cameron Perrin (Nov. 11/12).
Hill, a 5-foot-11 defender, scored the winning goal in McGill's 2-0 shutout over Bishop's at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday. It was the first career goal in four seasons for the 21-year-old senior. She sneaked up-field from her defensive position and moved into the box, where she was able to head a corner kick into the top left corner of the net during the 24th minute of play. Hill, who serves as an alternate captain, has returned for a master's degree in physical therapy after graduating in only three years with a science degree last spring.
