Monty Weatherall from Amersham, England, and
Stephy Tchoukuiegno of St. Laurent, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Dec. 4, 2022.
Weatherall, a six-foot, 183-pound fly-half on the Redbirds rugby team, scored 20 of the team’s 45 points over three games and earned all-tournament honours, leading fifth-seeded McGill to a silver medal finish at the national championship in Vancouver, B.C. The team captain was 4-for-4 on penalty kicks and made four of his five conversion attempts. A 22-year-old senior, he is majoring in international development studies. In the tourney quarter-final last Wednesday, Weatherall tallied 13 points, including the winning convert with 17 minutes remaining, as McGill edged No. 4 Laurier 23-22. Two days later, the RSEQ conference all-star added seven points in a 17-11 semifinal victory over eighth-seeded Trinity Western.
Tchoukuiegno , a 5-foot-7 guard on the Martlets basketball team, scored a season-high 18 points with one rebound and a steal in 29 minutes of playing time during a 72-65 loss to visiting Bishop’s on Dec. 3. The 20-year-old physical and health education freshman connected on 63.6 percent in field-goal shooting (7/11), including a solid 4-for-6 performance from three-point range. She was recruited to McGill this season after starring on the court for Vanier College.
