MONTREAL –
Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y., and
Jennifer Silver of Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 16, 2013.
McKiernan, a six-foot,194-pound defenceman with the men's hockey team, scored five points, including a shorthanded goal as McGill rallied from a 6-2 deficit with less than 12 minutes remaining to defeat Nipissing 7-6 in overtime last Friday. It was the largest come-from-behind victory in McGill history. The 24-year-old finance senior tallied scored four of his five points in the late stages of the game. He igniting the comeback with a shorthanded marker at 8:37 of the third period, which narrowed the deficit to 6-3. He then set up two others, including the tying marker at 18:13 and the winning goal with only 25 seconds remaining in overtime. A three-time Academic All-Canadian, McKiernan led all CIS defenceman in scoring with a 13-24-37 record in 28 games. Before joining the Redmen in 2010, he previously played in the QMJHL for
Guy Boucher’s Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Silver, a 5-foot-11 forward with the women's basketball team, came off the bench to score 29 points and grab 16 rebounds in only 42 minutes of court-time as the Martlets swept games from Laval and Bishop’s last week. Over the two contests, the 20-year-old pre-medicine freshman shot a stellar 57.1 per cent from the field (12/21) and 83.3 per cent from the free-throw line, making five of six attempts. She added four blocks and one steal. Before joining the Martlets in 2013, she starred for Dawson College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
