HANOVER, N.H. — McGill spotted the Dartmouth Rugby Football Club a 24-point lead, then nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback before falling 29-27 in men's preseason rugby action at Brophy Field on Saturday.

The Dartmouth RFC is celebrating its 75th yea, while the McGill squad is in its 155th year of operation.

The host Big Green scored all 29 of their points in the opening half and led 29-5 before the Redbirds reeled off 22 unanswered points. McGill had pulled to within two by the 71st minute but Dartmouth's defence held firm over the closing stages.

It marked the third consecutive year the schools have crossed paths in preseason play. Dartmouth won 26-17 at home on Aug. 31, 2024, before McGill answered with a 28-14 victory at Percival Molson Stadium last year.

"It was a game of two halves," said McGill head coach Ian Baillie. "The boys put everything into the attack for the final eight minutes but very strong defending by Dartmouth kept us from getting a winning score."

McGill applied pressure early but was unable to capitalize and Dartmouth struck first when captain Luke Morrow scored an unconverted try in the third minute.

Ed Volley crossed the line four minutes later and Ethan Knight converted for a 12-0 advantage. Morrow added a penalty goal in the 20th minute to stretch the margin to 15 points.

The Redbirds finally broke through in the 27th minute when Mason Graves Brown scored an unconverted try.

Dartmouth responded almost immediately. Knight scored a try in the 30th minute and kicked the conversion, then converted Volley's second try three minutes later to send the Big Green into halftime with a commanding 29-5 lead.

McGill turned the tables after the break.

Rob Frascione touched down in the 49th minute and Max Bernhart converted to make it 29-12. Matt Corkum added an unconverted try in the 58th before his brother Harry Corkum scored twice in a four-minute span.

Harry's first try, in the 67th minute, cut the deficit to seven. He crossed the line again in the 71st to make it 29-27, but the ensuing conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

McGill continued to press for the go-ahead score but Dartmouth kept the Redbirds out. The Big Green had a chance to add some insurance in the 79th minute, but their penalty kick attempt sailed wide.

The Redbirds will open their RSEQ regular-season schedule on Sept. 13 with a 1 p.m. kickoff against École de technologie supérieure, the two-time defending RSEQ champions, at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard.

HANOVER, N.H. — McGill a accordé une avance de 24 points au Dartmouth Rugby Football Club, avant de passer bien près de réussir une remontée spectaculaire, s'inclinant 29-27 dans un match préparatoire de rugby masculin disputé samedi au Brophy Field.

Le Dartmouth RFC célèbre cette année son 75e anniversaire, tandis que la formation de McGill en est à sa 155e année d'existence.

Le Big Green, qui évoluait à domicile, a inscrit ses 29 points en première demie pour prendre les devants 29-5, avant de voir les Redbirds répliquer avec 22 points sans riposte. McGill a réduit l'écart à deux points à la 71e minute, mais la défensive de Dartmouth a tenu bon dans les dernières minutes.

Il s'agissait d'une troisième rencontre préparatoire consécutive entre les deux formations. Dartmouth avait remporté le duel de 2024 par 26-17 à domicile, le 31 août, avant que McGill ne prenne sa revanche l'an dernier avec un gain de 28-14 au stade Percival-Molson.

« Ce fut vraiment un match en deux temps, a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, Ian Baillie. Les gars ont tout donné en attaque au cours des huit dernières minutes, mais Dartmouth a très bien défendu et nous a empêchés d'inscrire les points qui nous auraient donné la victoire. »

McGill a exercé beaucoup de pression en début de rencontre sans toutefois parvenir à en profiter. Dartmouth a ouvert la marque lorsque le capitaine Luke Morrow a réussi un essai non transformé à la troisième minute.

Ed Volley a franchi la ligne des buts quatre minutes plus tard et Ethan Knight a réussi la transformation pour porter la marque à 12-0. Morrow a ensuite réussi une pénalité à la 20e minute pour donner une avance de 15 points aux siens.

Les Redbirds ont finalement débloqué à la 27e minute lorsque Mason Graves Brown a inscrit un essai non transformé.

Dartmouth a toutefois répliqué presque immédiatement. Knight a marqué un essai à la 30e minute avant de réussir lui-même la transformation. Trois minutes plus tard, il a transformé le deuxième essai de Volley pour permettre au Big Green de retraiter au vestiaire avec une confortable avance de 29-5.

McGill a renversé la vapeur au retour de la pause.

Rob Frascione a inscrit un essai à la 49e minute et Max Bernhart a réussi la transformation pour réduire l'écart à 29-12. Matt Corkum a ajouté un essai non transformé à la 58e minute, avant que son frère Harry Corkum n'aplatisse le ballon deux fois dans la zone des buts en l'espace de quatre minutes.

Le premier essai de Harry, à la 67e minute, a ramené McGill à sept points. Il a récidivé à la 71e pour réduire l'écart à 29-27, mais la tentative de transformation qui a suivi a raté la cible.

McGill a continué de mettre de la pression en quête des points qui lui auraient donné les devants, mais Dartmouth a fermé la porte. Le Big Green a eu l'occasion de se donner un peu de marge à la 79e minute, mais sa tentative de pénalité a raté la cible.

Les Redbirds amorceront leur calendrier régulier du RSEQ le 13 septembre à 13 h face à l'École de technologie supérieure, double championne en titre du RSEQ, au Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard.
