MONTREAL — Anthony Lapointe's remarkable journey from student employee at McGill University to the highest level of professional hockey is complete after earning a full-time contract as an NHL linesperson.
The National Hockey League has hired the 26-year-old Montreal native for the 2026-27 season, making him one of three new officials expected to join the league's roster. The NHL carried 38 full-time officials assigned to work the lines last season.
A recent graduate of the University's Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Lapointe filled a variety of roles with McGill Athletics and Recreation during his undergraduate years, serving on varsity event staff, working in the facilities office and equipment room, acting as an Athletics ambassador and helping with the annual McGill24 fundraising campaign.
"Anthony is an elite athlete and an ultimate team player who is coachable and personable," says Doug Hayward, a supervisor of officials with Hockey Québec and Hockey Canada who has helped develop numerous NHL officials. "His ascension through the ranks is certainly no surprise."
Raised in Montreal's Verdun borough, Lapointe played CEGEP hockey at André-Laurendeau before enrolling at McGill in 2022, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical and health education last December. While balancing a demanding academic schedule, he became one of the most familiar faces around the McGill Sports Centre, embracing jobs that ranged from football ball runner and volleyball ball roller to basketball floor wiper — roles he has described as his favourite because they kept him close to the action.
"I'm kind of a workaholic," Lapointe said in a feature published by McGill Athletics earlier this year. "As soon as I enrolled at McGill, I started looking for work in the Athletics department. I like to be busy."
His path to the NHL has been remarkably swift. After returning to officiating in 2021 with Hockey Québec, Lapointe quickly climbed through the ranks, working Midget AAA, junior AAA, U SPORTS, the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, the ECHL, the Professional Women's Hockey League and the American Hockey League. He also earned assignments through Hockey Canada, including officiating the gold-medal game at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Lapointe has worked approximately 130 games annually across multiple leagues, earning a reputation for his professionalism, skating ability and composure under pressure. His NHL appointment caps a rapid rise through the Hockey Québec, Hockey Canada and American Hockey League development pipeline.
He is one of three McGill graduates currently officiating at the highest levels of sport. The others are Benoit Major (BSc'95), now in his 21st season as a Canadian Football League referee, and Julianne Zussman (BA'08), an international rugby referee whose assignments have included the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
Lapointe's promotion adds another McGill alumnus to the ranks of elite hockey officials. He joins a long list of McGillians to reach the NHL, including nine players and 10 coaches.

De McGill à la LNH : Anthony Lapointe se joint au personnel des officiels de la ligue
Le diplômé en kinésiologie devient le premier ancien de McGill à agir comme officiel dans la Ligue nationale de hockey
MONTRÉAL – Le parcours d'Anthony Lapointe, passé d'employé étudiant à l'Université McGill au plus haut niveau du hockey professionnel, vient de franchir une étape déterminante.
La Ligue nationale de hockey (LNH) a embauché le Montréalais de 26 ans à titre de juge de lignes à temps plein pour la saison 2026-2027. Il fait partie des trois nouveaux officiels qui se joindront au personnel de la ligue. La saison dernière, la LNH comptait 38 juges de lignes à temps plein.
Diplômé en juin dernier du Département de kinésiologie et d'éducation physique de McGill,
Lapointe a occupé plusieurs fonctions au sein du Service des sports et loisirs de McGill pendant ses études.
Récemment diplômé du Département de kinésiologie et d'éducation physique de l'Université McGill, Lapointe a occupé plusieurs fonctions au sein de McGill Athletics and Recreation pendant ses études de premier cycle. Il a notamment travaillé au sein du personnel des événements sportifs universitaires, aux installations et à la salle d'équipement, agi comme ambassadeur de McGill Athletics et contribué à la campagne annuelle de financement McGill24.
« Anthony est un athlète d'élite et un coéquipier exemplaire, réceptif à l'enseignement et doté d'excellentes qualités humaines, a déclaré Doug Hayward, superviseur des officiels à Hockey Québec et Hockey Canada, qui a contribué au développement de nombreux officiels ayant atteint la LNH. Son ascension dans les rangs ne surprend personne. »
Originaire de l'arrondissement Verdun à Montréal, Lapointe a évolué au hockey collégial avec les Boomerangs du Cégep André-Laurendeau avant de s'inscrire à l'Université McGill en 2022, où il a obtenu un baccalauréat en éducation physique et à la santé en décembre dernier. En parallèle de ses études, il est devenu l'un des visages les plus familiers du Centre sportif de McGill, remplissant une multitude de fonctions lors des événements sportifs, notamment comme ramasseur de ballons au football et au volleyball ou préposé à l'entretien du terrain au basketball — des tâches qu'il affectionnait particulièrement parce qu'elles lui permettaient de demeurer au cœur de l'action.
« Je suis un peu un bourreau de travail, avait confié Lapointe dans un reportage publié par McGill Athletics plus tôt cette année. Dès mon arrivée à McGill, je me suis mis à la recherche d'un emploi au sein du département des sports. J'aime être occupé. »
Sa progression vers la LNH a été fulgurante. Après un retour à l'arbitrage en 2021 avec Hockey Québec, Lapointe a rapidement gravi les échelons en étant affecté aux niveaux Midget AAA, junior AAA, U SPORTS, de la Ligue de hockey junior Maritimes Québec (LHJMQ), de l'ECHL, de la Ligue professionnelle de hockey féminin (LPHF) et de la Ligue américaine de hockey (LAH). Il a également obtenu plusieurs mandats de Hockey Canada, dont la finale pour la médaille d'or du Championnat mondial junior 2026 de l'IIHF.
Lapointe a dirigé environ 130 matchs par saison au cours des dernières années, se forgeant une réputation d'officiel reconnu pour son professionnalisme, son coup de patin et son sang-froid. Son embauche par la LNH couronne une progression rapide au sein du programme de développement des officiels de Hockey Québec, de Hockey Canada et de la Ligue américaine.

Cette nomination ajoute un autre diplômé de McGill aux rangs des officiels d'élite du hockey professionnel. Lapointe rejoint une longue liste de McGillois ayant accédé à la LNH, qui comprend notamment neuf joueurs et dix entraîneurs.
